With the acceleration of China’s aging process,community-based elderly care has become the main way of urban elderly care.Community gardens,as a unique community space resource, can provide various functions such as leisure, fitness, and communication for the elderly, meet their physiological, psychological and social needs, and improve their quality of life and happiness. However, there are still many problems in the construction of community gardens in China, such as unreasonable planning and design, imperfect management mechanism, weak aging suitability, which affect the attractiveness and service effect of community gardens for the elderly. Therefore, exploring how to build an aging-suitable community garden has important theoretical significance and practical value. This paper takes community gardens and elderly groups as research objects and studies the construction problem of aging-suitable community gardens.First of all, through literature research method,it reviews the development history, policy environment and aging suitability theory of community gardens.Secondly,it analyzes the supply and demand factors that affect the construction of aging-suitable community gardens and summarizes the characteristics of aging-suitable community gardens in terms of design, planting and construction mechanism.Based on this analysis framework for building an aging-suitable community garden is established.Thirdly three typical cases in the main urban area of Jingzhou are selected for empirical research.Through survey method and graphic analysis method a comparative analysis is made on attitudes towards participation degree among elderly people in each case study communities towards building a garden for them. Finally according to exploratory research method it puts forward policies design planting mechanisms strategies for promoting aging suitability of community gardens based on empirical research results This paper mainly has following findings:(1)Building an aging-suitable community garden has important significance for promoting balanced allocation utilization social resources alleviating urban pressure aspects such as background society physiological needs spiritual needs resolving conflicts easing neighborhood relations optimizing green development etc.(2)Community gardens in Jingzhou city have characteristics such as flexible design preference ornamental planting edible planting high demand among elderly people spontaneous autonomous diverse participation motives but also face problems such as lack policy regulations poor planning design low social participation degree imperfect management mechanism single operation mode etc.(3)The construction of community gardens cannot be separated from policy support.Community gardens are restricted by existing policy environment need establish supportive system through government interaction collaboration with elderly people formulating coordinated development policies implementing incentive measures etc build mutual aid guidance network suitable environment.(4)A construction strategy for an aging-suitable community garden is established. This study analyzes three community gardens in Jingzhou city collects opinions participants other non-participants residents proposes policy recommendations design mode strategies planting mode strategies construction mechanism strategies etc construct an aging-suitable garden which include: building “top-down” guidance network coordinating with service policies compiling detailed clear documents implementing incentives;appropriate site selection location-specific functional types convenient necessary infrastructure;stimulating multi-sensory plant selection flexible diverse forms soilless cultivation main methods;assisting organization mechanism facilitating management mechanism enjoying operation mechanism.
