In recent years, global climate change and urbanization have had a profound impact on urban environment and human settlements. In this context, conducting research on urban microclimate and thermal comfort is crucial for urban planning and architectural design.Especially in hot summer and cold winter regions, people’s demand for outdoor environments is more complex, and the impact of seasonal changes needs to be considered. As a special place, the thermal comfort of the outdoor space on a university campus is of great significance to the physical and mental health of teachers and students.Firstly, the article summarizes the theoretical basis of urban microclimate and human thermal comfort, including the development process and research methods at home and abroad. The article classifies and introduces heat balance models, biometeorological models, and heat stress indexes, and provides suggestions for the selection of methods to evaluate thermal comfort. The Universal Thermal Climate Index(UTCI)is selected as the final evaluation standard for thermal comfort in campus, taking into account environmental particularities and the adaptability of indicators. Then,it analyzes the spatial form, constituent elements, and design elements of university buildings in hot summer and cold winter regions.Representative measurement points were selected for microclimate measurement, and the wind environment data measured and simulated by software were analyzed and compared. The verification results showed that the measured data at each measurement point were relatively close to the simulation results in butterfly, further proving that butterfly and Open FOAM numerical simulation software can be used for the study of microclimate and thermal comfort in the campus in this region. Finally, the overall microclimate and thermal comfort of the campus on typical days in summer and winter were simulated using Ladybug software. The simulation results reveal the distribution of microclimate and thermal comfort on campus in summer and winter, and propose a method for optimizing outdoor thermal comfort on university campuses in hot summer and cold winter regions by changing three influencing factors:building density, relative location of buildings, and opening orientation of buildings, and conduct simulation validation. It provides important data support for the study of microclimate and thermal comfort on campuses in hot summer and cold winter areas, and also provides optimization strategies for the outdoor thermal environment design of campuses in this area.
