This thesis discusses the growing focus on the development of traditional villages, particularly in Shanxi Province, where there are numerous such villages. In recent years, policies have been introduced to safeguard and promote the growth of these traditional communities.Firstly, the authors conduct a preliminary understanding of Jinzhong and its traditional villages. Then, the boundary morphology is defined, and the driving factors affecting the village boundary are divided into natural environment, social and cultural, and internal space factors. The above factors are introduced and defined, and the boundary morphology features are quantified.Jinzhong traditional villages are classified into different shapes of the boundary morphology.A research approach for quantifying the boundary morphology is proposed.Secondly, the study focusses on the "formation law of the boundary morphology under the natural environment." The authors quantitatively analyze the driving factors of the boundary morphology, including terrain, rivers, and transportation. The gray correlation degree approach is applied to calculate the correlation between these factors and the village boundary shape index. The study shows that altitude and average slope in the topography are highly correlated to the village boundary shape index. The distance from the village boundary to the river system has a certain impact on the village boundary morphology. The study also shows that when the distance between the village boundary and the river system is less than 200 m,the river system has a stronger traction effect on the village boundary.Road transportation and river systems have similar linear impact driving factors.Villages within 200 m from county roads are defined as nearby road type villages, which are influenced by the Jin merchants culture.Due to the influence of road driving factors, the villages adjacent to the road present a strip or strip-shaped boundary morphology, while some villages present a round-shaped or round-shaped boundary morphology.Thirdly, the authors analyze the boundary morphology from the perspective of social and cultural driving factors and internal spatial driving factors. They explore the "formation law of the boundary morphology under the social and cultural driving factors." The study shows that social and cultural driving factors have an indirect impact on the village boundary morphology through historical culture and socioeconomics.Historical culture affects the arrangement, scale, form, and other aspects of the village’s internal buildings, thus influencing the village boundary morphology.Social economics have little effect on the village boundary morphology but have impacts on the village’s expansion speed. The study further applies ecological landscape theory, fractal theory, and spatial syntaxis theory to research the impact of internal space on the village boundary morphology. The authors first conduct a correlation analysis between building groups and the village boundary shape index, showing that the average nearest distance of buildings and their degree of aggregation are the biggest factors influencing the village boundary morphology. The study shows that the public space mainly has an indirect effect on the village boundary morphology. Finally, the authors apply the axis analysis method in spatial syntax theory to quantitatively analyze and research the street block. The correlation between global integration, local integration, connectivity, understandability, and the village boundary morphology is analyzed. The results show that global integration and understandability have high correlation values, indicating that the complexity and connectivity of the streets affect the village boundary morphology indirectly.A combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis is used to study the formation of the boundary patterns of traditional villages in Jinzhong, taking into account the synergy of external natural environmental drivers, social and human drivers and internal spatial drivers. The research aims to provide relevant ideas and methods for the future conservation and development of traditional villages in the Jinzhong region.
