With the rapid development of urban construction in China since the 1990 s,the way of large-scale demolition and construction has changed the form and features of the old city greatly. The homogenized new form has gradually eroded and destroyed the traditional fabric, making traditional areas fragmented and faced the dual challenge of conservation and regeneration. In this research, the Hehuatang traditional residential area, located in the south of Nanjing old city is selected as the research object.Based on the analysis of the social events and urban form evolution, the morphological characteristics of public space are analyzed.Combined with the emotions and behaviors of residents, the relationship between form and sense of place are explored to provide a research basis for the regeneration. The text is divided into four chapters. In the second chapter, the historical events and policies in different periods are analyzed to understand the changes of social and demographic structure in this area.In the third chapter, through the analysis of historical maps, aerial photographs and cadastral maps, the evolution of street network, building texture and plot organization has been revealed. Then combining with the social transformation mentioned above, the mechanism and motivation behind the evolution are explored, providing historical basis for the current public space research in the following two chapters. The fourth and fifth chapters study the public space of streets and plots respectively from three aspects: urban form, sense of place and the correlation analysis. In urban form research, the paper studies the composition characteristics of various plots, the distribution and evolution of public space through urban form elements analysis for the plots part. For the streets part, the form research includes accessibility, function uses, plan shapes, circulations, building functions, styles and height.Compare the commonness and difference of different streets and plots, and explore the influence relationship between urban form elements. In the research of sense of place, public space is measured and evaluated by means of place attachment scale and behavioral activity observation. Finally, the rules of urban form and sense of place can be revealed by correlation and comparison. The above two chapters respectively analyze the public space of plots and streets in the same way.In the sixth chapter, the streets and plots are correlative analyzed in urban form and sense of place aspects, obtaining the mechanism of sense of place in this area, and proposing the public space regeneration strategy. To sum up,taking public space as the starting point, this paper discusses the historical structure and constitution rules of traditional residential areas from the perspective of diachronic development, and researches the characteristics and construction of public space from the perspective of material and emotional connection,in order to find the clue between the past and the future, and between human and environment. |
