the open space of urban waterfront is charged with that to create high-quality,diversified recreation sites, and it is also the bearing point of the historical culture of the city. A successful waterfront site can meet public's behavior needs and spiritual needs; it also can enhance the vitality of waterfront open space,create colorful social activities and enhance the atmosphere of the city's cultural landscape. In this paper, referring to the practice cases, I propose the approach which is to Waterfront open space areas of content and sites of shape optimization approach.The first chapter is an introduction that shows the research background, meaning, content and ideas, etc. According to neglecting the needs of society,culture and people in waterfront designing and planning, I propose the necessary of Create waterfront open space areas of study。The second chapter contains some concepts and research profile at home and abroad. Based on explaining the concepts, the paper points out the significance of introducing the place theory to building waterfront open space activities. In this chapter, the paper analyses some domestic and foreign outstanding cases, so this builds the basis for shaping the content and evaluation of sense of place in the next paper chapters.The third chapter explores and analyzes the sense of place of waterfront open space. According to analyzing the elements of sense of place of waterfront open space, this chapter points out the nature of sence of Space. The ultimate goal of sence of Space is to achieve the harmony and unity among people,places and nature.The forth chapter tells you the content of sence of space and evaluation. Concluded earlier chapters, from the three aspects of the functional structure,environmental factors and environmental quality, the paper concludes the contents of sence of space. The paper introduces POE method and analyses the evaluation factors of sence of space in this chapter. Finally it gives us the assessment of significance of sence of space.Case study is contained in the fifth chapter. Get the Stone Town along the QinHuai River as a example, I did very comprehensive research and visiting, and carried out analysis about its sence of Space. I find its defects and propose the optimization strategies for those defects. Finally, I propose an interactive designing theory as a guide for the future designing.There is the conclusion of this paper in the last chapter.
