The emergence of urban villages is a unique phenomenon in the process of urbanization in China.Due to various factors such as policy changes, legal improvements, economic development and social progress in recent years, there are still a large number of urban villages in Guangzhou that have escaped the fate of demolition. How to reunderstand their relationship with the city to stimulate more potential and achieve“symbiosis” with the city has become a new design issue. The research aims to explore a more effective way to renew urban villages in the future by conducting multi-dimensional identity research, transformation process analysis and evaluation of existing methods. In recent years, the regeneration methods and policies of urban villages in Guangzhou have changed from large-scale demolition to small-scale and gradual transformation. As a unique and active social ecosystem and vivid urban imagery,it creates irreplaceable value for the city, which is embodied in the heterogeneous spatial characteristics, thriving informal economy,urban-rural integrated cultural landscape, and inclusive and diverse communities.Based on the current status of the renovation, which mainly focuses on improving infrastructure construction and improving the quality of the physical environment,as well as the analysis of the design cases of alike sites, the method of “community micro-renewal” is proposed, which not only pays attention to the renovation of physical space, but also emphasizes on the development of the neighbourhood. The design aim to activate the Nanting neighbourhood and enhance the openness and attractiveness of the village through the interaction between different groups and the renovation of the existing sites. And it results in transforming the unused floor of the indoor commercial street in the northern part of the village into a new space for young people to stimulate the cooperation between groups and the development of the local business. The design also readapts the abandoned ferry station located by the Pearl River into an exhibition venue, interpreting the local history and culture.Public service projects and cultural events will be carried out in the adjacent ancestral temple, reclaiming its the public nature. The results of the design prove that the community micro-renewal method can effectively guide designers to regenerate urban villages in a targeted manner. However,it has certain limitations when dealing with urban villages of various types and conditions since this method can only guide the transformation process in the form of empirical strategies and summative indicators — a specific and universal model cannot be found. Therefore, its application needs the support and cooperation of other theories and technologies.
