The ancient town of Qingmuchuan, located at the crossroads of Shaanxi,Gansu and Sichuan provinces,is situated in the southwest corner of Ningqiang County,Hanzhong City,Shaanxi Province.Because of this special natural geographical location and the fusion of multiple cultures,an unusual regional terroir has been formed. After a hundred years of age,the ancient town of Qingmuchuan still has a large number of intact ancient buildings. However, the conservation of the old town is no longer limited to the physical elements such as the old buildings and streets preserved in the area, but more importantly to the regional cultural values presented by the old town itself in terms of natural ecology and historical and humanistic aspects. However, most people generally focus only on the value of traditional architecture and spatial forms, neglecting the profound cultural temperament and its multiple values that are embedded in the interaction between people and places during the formation and development of the ancient town.At present, there is still room for improvement in the conservation and development of Qingmucheon ancient town,so the exploration and protection of its multiple values and connotations is crucial to the revitalisation of the town and the revitalisation of the countryside, and is an urgent need of the times.Through the study of relevant theories and literature, this research has developed a methodology for studying the value of ancient towns based on a cultural landscape perspective. The method includes three aspects: comprehensive research based on the relationship between people and place, analysis of the development evolution and current situation based on the cultural landscape system, and evaluation of the value of cultural landscape features based on history and current situation.Next,a historical study was conducted on the regional background of the town’s natural ecology, spatial settlement, industrial activities and cultural spirit to uncover the regional cultural characteristics and connotations of the town, and to analyse the basic regional conditions for the value of the town to emerge. The study then identifies the constituent elements of the town in terms of its natural ecology, spatial settlement, industrial activities and cultural spirit, and analyses the existing development problems of the town. Finally, the study evaluates the value of the cultural landscape system of Qingmucheon based on its developmental and evolutionary context and current situation, and proposes corresponding conservation planning strategies. The main conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)The formation and evolution of the features of the ancient town and the cultural landscape are similar in that they are both influenced by the material and immaterial characteristics of the interaction process of the human-earth relationship, and the study clarifies the mechanisms of interaction between the constituent elements of the cultural landscape system of the Qingmucheon ancient town.(2)Through a comprehensive survey, the constituent elements of the cultural landscape features of Qingmucheon ancient town were analysed. The value of the ancient town needs to consider multiple values, and the construction of a cultural landscape system consisting of four subsystems: natural ecology, spatial settlement, industrial activities and cultural spirit, can form a systematic and operable logic for the study of the value of the ancient town.(3)A quantitative and qualitative approach is used to evaluate the value of the cultural landscape features of Qingmucheon ancient town.(4)A conservation planning strategy for the cultural landscape features of Qingmucheon Ancient Town is proposed.Qingmucheon Ancient Town has outstanding values, including natural scenery, traditional architecture,Qiang embroidery skills and diversified culture, and should be protected as a whole with value-oriented conservation and value features in order to promote the conservation and development of Qingmucheon Ancient Town. |
