China is in a critical period of economic transformation. With the steady promotion of the rural revitalization strategy, rural guesthouses have maintained a good momentum of vigorous development, which leap to become the first choice for residence. The improvement of living standards, the advent of the experience era,and the upgrading of consumption patterns have aggravated the problem of the transformation of guesthouses, which is reflected in serious homogenization and a lack of experience to meet the needs of tourists.Relevant economic data from government departments indicate that guesthouses have reached a bottleneck, and it is worthwhile to investigate how rural guesthouses should develop in the future. Therefore, this paper investigates the current situation of rural guesthouses development, takes contextualization as the entry point, and provides tourists with the "real mountain, natural water, authentic feeling" experience as the starting point. The study takes rural guesthouses as the research objects based on human perception experience and compares the theories, concepts, and literature related to contextual experience at home and abroad.Field surveys, questionnaires, and observations are performed to study the space layout, space composition, and space use of guesthouses around the Yimeng Mountain scenic area in Linyi,Shandong Province. From the instinctive, behavioral, and reflective levels of experience, the needs of experience subjects and the current problems of guestroom space construction are analyzed. It is pointed out that the current rural guesthouses focus on physical transformation and development, yet neglect human perceptual experience, devoid of human participation and perceptual attention. The intervention in the natural environment and the construction of cultural connotations and design are inadequate as well.Combining Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological theory,Maslow’s theory of needs, and the theory of originality in heritage conservation, the study argues that contextual experience is based on the three dimensions of tourists’ experiential needs, perceptual experience, and the creation of natural and humanistic environments. The study insists that the interpretation of contextual experience and the creation of rural guestroom space dominated by contextual experience should be based on a multidimensional perceptual experience focused on tourists. The rational construction and sensual aesthetics of the natural environment should be balanced. The scripted reproduction and emotional evoking of the humanistic environment should be involved.Following the principle of satisfying tourists’ perceptual experience, the principle of coexistence of rational construction and sensual aesthetics of the natural environment, and the principle of scripted reproduction of a humanistic environment, this study carries out the case analysis of the spatial construction of three guesthouses,i.e.,Paradero Todos Santos in Mexico,Hokkaido Zaborin in Japan, and Xiang Gen Donglindu. The analysis proposes a humanistic and experience-oriented guesthouse spatial context construction. The study proposes creating a multi-dimensional perceptive space,a perceptive-mediated contextual experience,an original natural context, and a local human context, which finally constructs a multi-dimensional perceptive, original, and scenario-based guesthouse space. The research findings indicate that tourists are the main body and space is the object in the creation of rural guesthouse space. Therefore,it should be based on tourists’ experience needs, remained human-oriented,and focused on tourists’ psychological needs and behavioral needs.More attention should be set on human perception, back to the originally natural experience, which serves to create rural guesthouses that enable individuals to enjoy life, experience culture, and return to nature.
