Display lighting was the cornerstone of the museum’s lighting environment, which plays a vital role in the conservation of cultural artifacts and displays.Currently, museum display lighting suffers from a major problem of discomfort glare, which has a negative impact on the visitor experience and is difficult to detect and adjust. The detection and management of discomfort glare in the display lighting environment is considered to be of major relevance for the building and development of museums in China,as the number of museums and tourists grows. To begin, the subjective human factors experiment was created and carried out based on research of the features of discomfort glare in museum display lighting.18 individuals assessed discomfort glare on the Boyce scale in 25 simulated lighting situations with various glare conditions, and an ANOVA was used to explore the effect of the main photometric parameters on the perception of the discomfort glare. The experimental findings revealed that the effect of background luminance on the subjects’ discomfort glare perception varied depending on the exhibit surface illumination level. The evaluation model of discomfort glare was constructed using multiple linear fitting on the basis of the aforesaid research, and the fitting coefficient was 0.941.This model prediction result outperforms the existing typical indoor uncomfortable glare evaluation models.Second, research on the discomfort glare detection and control method and scheme were conducted using the evaluation model created in this research. The discomfort glare detection algorithm was built using the evaluation model and realized the detection of discomfort glare by measuring the average illumination of the exhibits. The sensor layout method was optimized using the simulation software DIALux,yielding the best layout approach. The lighting adjustment method was constructed using the pulse width modulation approach paired with gamma correction.By altering the brightness of the display illumination source,a lighting control algorithm based on fuzzy PID-based is proposed to control discomfort glare.Meanwhile, the hardware and software system for detecting and controlling discomfort glare are planned and built on the STM32 hardware platform.Matlab was used to simulate and test the effect of the control algorithm. The results reveal that the lighting control algorithm developed for this research has significant advantages in terms of system stability, response speed, and antiinterference capability. Finally,a test environment was set up to test and analyze the overall system. The results show that:the average illuminance measurement relative error is 5.04 percent, the illuminance uniformity relative error is 2.85 percent; The lighting control system has a steady-state time of about 3.5s and an overshoot of about 8.25 percent. In the case of light-insensitive exhibits, the discomfort glare detection was 0.27,and the correlation was 0.924.When the control threshold is set to 3.3 for a better display effect in exhibit, and the exposure can be reduced by an average of 16.90 percent under different working conditions. The test and analysis findings suggest that the method described in this research may successfully improve the visual comfort of display lighting on the basis of cultural relic protection by detecting and controlling uncomfortable glare of exhibition lighting.
