A Study On The Phenomenon Of Four-character Idiomization Of Garden View Titles In The Ming And Qing Dynasties

The title of the garden view has a long history,rich connotation,elegant rhetoric,refined form,and has the practical functions of landscape guidance and deepening of artistic conception.It is an indispensable part of Chinese classical gardens.The past research on garden view titles is abundant and covers a wide range.Many scholars have noticed that garden view titles use four characters more.Some scholars also compare the four-character garden view titles with the four-character idioms.However,due to the language discipline involved,they didn’t discuss it in depth.Taking the Ming and Qing gardens as an example,this thesis sorts out and analyzes the four-character idiomization phenomenon of garden view titles according to the logic of "phenomenon-cause-regular pattern".First,based on the "Preliminary Chronology of Chinese Gardens",100 examples of Ming and Qing gardens were selected according to the categories of royal gardens,private gardens,and public gardens.The four-character garden view titles of the selected garden cases were sorted together with the relevant materials of the garden view titles,and a total of 1303 four-character garden view titles were sorted out.Using the Corpus of the Chinese Linguistics Research Center of Peking University and the National Language Commission Corpus as tools to check the origins of the four-character garden view titles,a total of 487 four-character garden view titles were sorted out which quoted from idioms,accounting for about 37.38%.Then,summarized the five reasons why the four-character garden view titles were widely used in Ming and Qing Dynasties.The in-depth reasons are the balanced and symmetrical national aesthetic psychology and the digital preferences under the influence of digital culture.The internal reason is that the four-character form has the language advantages of balanced symmetry,harmony in phonology and ease of memory.The first external reason is that most of the materials used in idioms and translations are four-characters,the second is the spread and promotion of the landscape assemble appellation.The deep-seated reason for the quotation of four-character garden view titles and the use of idioms in Ming and Qing Dynasties is the cultural psychology of respecting the ancient and saintly.The material basis is the numerous cultural classics produced by historical accumulation,and the external reasons are the literary tradition of quotation and dissemination of language memes.Finally,summarized the four regular patterns.In terms of word selection,Ming and Qing gardens often choose nouns that represent physical landscape elements,combining monosyllabic and polysyllabic words,supplemented by adjectives,verbs,time words and location words to create four-character garden view titles.Regarding the combination of consonants,rhymes,and tones,the technique of dual tones,repetition and flat tones are often used to present the rhythm and rhythm of the voice.In terms of connotation expression,it can be divided into two major systems: realism and freehand brushwork,creating garden view titles from multiple levels and angles.In terms of idiomization,four-character garden view titles in Ming and Qing Dynasties often condense the idioms into the four-character grid through the methods of quoting idioms,extracting idioms or abbreviating simplification,merging excerpts,adjusting order of excerpts,adding and modifying words,and generalizing idioms.
