The Winter Olympic Games are an international sporting event that promotes the spirit of human solidarity and world peace. The success of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games is not only a powerful demonstration of the country’s comprehensive strength, but also a reflection of China’s international role and the style of a great nation. In the preparatory process for the Winter Olympics, the Winter Olympic Village is responsible for providing the athletes and accompanying officials of the participating countries with the necessary places to live and work efficiently, and the construction of this core non-competition venue is one of the priorities in the preparation for the Winter Olympics. As a major event venue, the Winter Olympic Village has the responsibility of presenting the image of a great nation and communicating cultural expressions,as well as respecting the existing environment and leading the way, both to serve the event efficiently and to be a positive Olympic legacy after the Games. This study takes the design of the Winter Olympic Village as the research object, based on the development characteristics and design difficulties of previous Winter Olympic Villages, and proposes the principles and strategies of adaptive design for the Winter Olympic Village with the theory of architectural adaptability as the core guide, and uses the Beijing 2022 Yanqing Winter Olympic Village as an example for analysis and verification.Firstly, the documents related to the design requirements of the Winter Olympic Village during the competition were sorted out,an in-depth longitudinal study of previous Winter Olympic Villages was conducted, four development stages were summarised, namely the temporary facilities stage, the urban catalyst stage, the satellite layout stage and the cluster model stage, their design concepts, development history, dominant factors and development trends of post-competition utilisation were explored, their post-competition conversion characteristics, complex functional characteristics, environmental relationship characteristics It also summarises its post-competition conversion characteristics, complex functional characteristics, environmental relationship characteristics and cultural and technical characteristics, and summarises the difficulties in adaptive design of the Winter Olympic Village, filling the academic gap in the longitudinal study of the Winter Olympic Village in China.Secondly, the adaptive theory of architecture is studied, its definition, influencing factors, levels and characteristics are analysed, four architectural adaptive design sensitivities are refined, namely time adaptation, building physical adaptation, environmental adaptation and value enhancement adaptation, and the adaptive design principles and strategies for the Winter Olympic Village are proposed, providing academic supplements for the adaptive design of large-scale event venues.Based on the above research, the adaptive design strategies and measures for the Winter Olympic Village in complex mountainous conditions are verified from four building adaptive design awarenesses, using the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games as an example. Finally, the effectiveness of the adaptive design of the Yanqing Winter Olympic Village is verified with the actual results during the competition, the post-competition conversion effect and the rapid conversion effect as a temporary ’quarantine hotel’ in case of epidemic. The study demonstrates that the village is capable of serving the competition demands to a high standard and supporting the sustainable engineering objectives of the Winter Olympic legacy. This study fills a gap in relevant academic research and provides a design methodology that can be applied to the design of future Winter Olympic Villages at home and abroad,as well as providing diverse ideas for the design and operation of housing and ski hotels in complex mountain conditions.
