The Global Value Chain(GVC)is becoming increasingly refined and complex,which is the new normal of the world economic development.China’s economic development needs to be embedded in the GVC,and to achieve the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals",it cannot be separated from the GVC division.China is actively embedded in the GVC,deeply integrated into the international division of labor,the industrial system has a strong carrying capacity and control ability,and the production division of labor model is closely related to environmental benefits,China’s manufacturing industry in the process of embedding in the GVC has produced fruitful economic dividends but also a significant increase in carbon emissions,has not yet achieved the decoupling of economic development and carbon costs,affecting the input and output factors of carbon emissions efficiency.Therefore,it is urgent to correctly understand the impact of GVC participation on the carbon emission efficiency of China’s manufacturing industry,analyze the spatial and temporal heterogeneity,clarify its internal mechanism of action,and find a new way to make China’s manufacturing industry reduce emissions and increase efficiency,and develop in a green and low-carbon way with high quality under the framework of GVC.To this end,this paper uses the SE-SBM model to measure the carbon emission efficiency of China’s provincial and regional manufacturing industries,and also uses the China Customs micro database to measure the degree of embeddedness of China’s provincial and regional manufacturing industries in GVC from the micro enterprise level.The results show that the carbon emission efficiency and the degree of GVC participation in China’s manufacturing industry have much room for improvement and there are significant differences in time and space.On this basis,considering that ignoring the spatial effect in environmental analysis may produce bias,this paper empirically investigates the impact of GVC participation on carbon emission efficiency and its spatial effect in China’s provincial manufacturing industry from 2000 to 2019 through a spatial Durbin model,and explores its intrinsic influence mechanism and spatial and temporal heterogeneity.The findings show that:i)there is a significant positive spatial spillover effect on the carbon emission efficiency of China’s provincial manufacturing industries;ii)in general,GVC participation is beneficial to enhance the carbon emission efficiency of manufacturing industries,especially in the eastern provinces of China,low-emission-efficient provinces and the time series phase of 2000-2009;iii)the interaction between GVC participation and structural effects enhances this positive effect,but the interaction with scale effect and technology effect will weaken the enhancement effect of GVC participation on carbon emission efficiency;(4)environmental regulation is generally beneficial to enhance carbon emission efficiency of manufacturing industry,but coal-based energy consumption structure will reduce carbon emission efficiency of manufacturing industry.Based on the above conclusions,China should make full use of the positive spatial spillover effect of manufacturing carbon emission efficiency,promote inter-provincial and even inter-regional exchanges and cooperation regarding green and low-carbon high-quality development;actively embed in the global value chain,and play the positive enhancement effect of embedding in the global value chain on manufacturing carbon emission efficiency according to local conditions;promote the benign diffusion of advanced green and low-carbon technologies,systems and experiences,etc.,improve production and processing techniques,and to actively realize the endogenous green technology progress;to actively carry out the adjustment and upgrading of manufacturing industry,and continuously reduce the proportion of high-emission and high-energy-consuming industries in the development of manufacturing industry;to improve the ability and level of environmental regulation,and to adjust the energy consumption structure,so as to strive to improve the carbon emission efficiency of China’s manufacturing industry and realize the coordinated development of economy and environment.
