The number and scale of projects in the construction industry continue to grow at a high rate worldwide, but accidents in this industry are still frequent and often have serious consequences that threaten personal safety,so the study of construction worker safety is important for the occupational health of workers and the development of the construction industry. The leader within a team establishes different qualities of exchange relationships with his or her subordinates(i.e.,leadership member exchange differentiation).Perception of Leader-member exchange differentiation(PLMXD)can be understood as an employee’s personal perception of the formation of differentiated relationships between leaders and different individuals within a team from a subjective perspective, and although PLMXD has been shown to be critical to the behavioral management of employees within a team, there is still a lack of information on how PLMXD affects construction workers’ safety citizenship behaviors(both affiliative safety citizenship behavior and change-oriented safety citizenship behavior). This study builds an empirical research model of the effects of PLMXD on two types of SCB and introduces organizational identity and felt safety responsibility as mediating mechanisms. This study collected a total of 320 valid data from construction workers from six construction projects in China. The results showed that PLMXD had a significant positive effect on both types of SCB,and organizational identification had a significant mediating effect on the relationship between PLMXD and change-oriented SCB,but not on PLMXD and affiliative SCB.Felt safety responsibility,on the other hand, significantly mediated the relationship between PLMXD and both types of SCB.This study extends the scope of leader-member exchange differentiation research and enriches the study of safety behavior by revealing the path of PLMXD’s influence on both types of safety citizenship behaviors. The research results help managers to adopt more management strategies to improve safety throughout the workplace from the perspective of building exchange relationships with team members and in conjunction with organization building and individualized employee management.
