| Dong embroidery is a visual representation of the identity of the Dong people in their costumes, bringing together their wisdom and distinctive aesthetics. There have been many academic studies on Dong embroidery, but most of them have focused on the specific study of ornamentation or the transmission and preservation of skills through general principles. There is therefore a need to shift the perspective of research and apply a historical, systematic, and holistic approach to explore the development of Dong embroidery over time, looking at its inter-temporal connections with people, culture, and society.Drawing on Arjun Appadurai’s perspective of bringing objects to life in society, this paper considers Dong embroidery as a human being, and by retracing the evolution of its life,it provides a coherent account of the collective memory of the Dong people,to look at the past and the present. The spiral trajectory of the Dong embroidery’s life,"beginning-continuation-progression",is a metamorphosis from an everyday object to a cultural tradition,a leap from a small region to a large world. It is a journey through history to see the development of Dong society and cultural changes and to reflect on the interwoven network of relationships between man and nature, man and man,and man and society.Nowadays,in the context of multicultural interaction, traditional objects such as the Dong embroidery are still in the process of constructing ethnic cultural symbols and superimposing modern values and meanings, and their potential as objects deserves our attention. Therefore we need to find the logic of the development of things in the context of the dynamic changes in ethnic traditional culture and the evolution of the times, and keep searching for the path of the return of tradition and the construction of modernity from the level of material culture and spiritual consciousness. |
