Since the first industrial revolution, the industrialization process of all countries in the world seems to have started to accelerate. However, the cost of rapid economic development is the huge consumption of natural resources and the continuous emission of pollutants, which leads to the long-term imbalance of the ecosystem, which also seriously threatens the survival and development of human beings. The most serious problem is the greenhouse effect caused by carbon dioxide emission.Faced with such serious ecological and environmental problems,China officially announced the goal of achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060 at the UN General Assembly. In order to realize the double carbon goal and the comprehensive green transformation of economy and society, our country needs an effective and scientific carbon reduction path to promote the work of carbon reduction in the whole society.Today, digital technology has penetrated into all aspects of society, and its strong communication and low energy consumption characteristics also provide a new direction of green transformation for economic and social production. Therefore, studying the impact of the development of digital economy on carbon emissions is conducive to promoting the process of carbon reduction in China, and providing digital solutions for realizing the vision of beautiful China as soon as possible.Based on this,on the basis of theoretical analysis, this paper selects the inter-provincial panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2019(except Xizang,Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan)to deeply discuss the impact of digital economy development on carbon emissions.First, the benchmark regression model is used to make a preliminary judgment on the carbon emission reduction effect of digital economy. The robustness test was conducted by replacing core explanatory variables, eliminating partial samples, endogeneity test and exogenous impact test. Then the nonlinear relationship between digital economy development and carbon emissions was investigated based on the threshold variable of education level.Meanwhile, the spatial Dubin model was used to analyze the spatial spillover effect of carbon emission reduction. Then, the logical recursive model is used to study the influence mechanism of carbon emission reduction effect exerted by digital economy, and whether the intensity of government environmental regulation will affect the size of carbon emission reduction effect is also speculated. Finally, this paper conducts grouping regression for different geographical locations, resources and non-resource areas to explore the heterogeneity of carbon emission reduction effect produced by the development of digital economy.Through empirical test, this paper draws the following four conclusions:(1)The development of digital economy can produce carbon emission reduction effect, and with the agglomeration of highly skilled personnel, the relationship between digital economy development and carbon emissions presents an inverted U-shaped relationship. In addition, the improvement of local digital economy development level is also conducive to the carbon reduction work in neighboring areas.(2)The development of digital economy significantly improves the level of regional green technology innovation, provides technical support for enterprises to realize green production, and can reduce the asymmetry of carbon information and optimize the carbon regulation mode by using the information diffusion characteristics of big data platform.(3)The stronger the government’s environmental regulation, the more obvious the carbon emission reduction effect of the development of digital economy.(4)In the central and western regions and resource-based regions, the more significant the carbon reduction effect of digital economy is,the greater the space for carbon emission reduction effect to play. This paper systematically and comprehensively studies the relationship between the development of digital economy and carbon emission, enriching the theoretical and empirical framework of ecological benefits generated by the development of digital economy, providing practical basis for the implementation of digital carbon reduction measures across the country, and providing digital policy suggestions for better and faster realization of the dual carbon goal and building a beautiful China. |
