The Qing Dynasty was the end of China’s feudal dynasty, and the traditional costumes of the Qing Dynasty, influenced by the mutual absorption of multiple ethnic cultures, were characterised by rich and colourful ornamentation and exquisite craftsmanship, and have occupied an important place in the history of Chinese costume. The colour palette of the Qing Dynasty not only embodies the traditional’five elements and five colours’ that have been passed down through the ages, but also provides contemporary designers with a constant source of inspiration and reference for their colour schemes. The Qing Dynasty drama was popular with viewers for its grey colour palette, but many viewers were led to believe that ’Morandi’ was the’Qianlong colour palette’ by marketing agencies. When faced with a vast amount of cultural knowledge, designers are prone to under-absorb and under-transform,often resulting in the blind use of colour and a lack of cultural connotation in their designs. This thesis aims to dig into the knowledge content of traditional colour setting laws of Qing Dynasty costumes for the purpose of colour application for designers, and to digitise and visualise the knowledge.Firstly,it composes and analyses the traditional cultural colour research system, and summarises the research methods of the traditional dress colour setting system for designer applications according to the knowledge needs when transforming design applications. The data from the Qing Dynasty costume collections of five museums are selected as the research data set from the perspectives of reliability, high quality, authority and comprehensiveness of the data sources, and a database of Qing Dynasty costume colours is constructed. Then, based on the colour system research method, the colour names, colour causes, colour expressions and aesthetic characteristics of Qing Dynasty costumes are sorted out from both material and immaterial colours, based on the records and descriptions in classic Qing Dynasty cultural texts and modern costume colour studies.By summarising and analysing the cultural connotations and aesthetic values,it provides a knowledge structure and content reserve for the digitalisation and visualisation of a cultural database on the colour scheme of Qing Dynasty clothing. Finally,by analysing the needs of designers in terms of knowledge acquisition, knowledge analysis and knowledge application, and combining the common visualisation forms of intangible cultural heritage databases,an interactive knowledge visualisation platform based on the visualisation form of knowledge mapping is constructed for the colour scheme of Qing Dynasty dresses.Through the visual mapping, designers can obtain information on the cultural imagery, chronological background, people, occasions of use, institutions of origin, colour characteristics and decorative techniques of colour application from the knowledge of the colour scheme of Qing Dynasty costumes,so as to better realise the modern transformation of traditional colour culture.Traditional colour-related textual records are vast and books are often lacking in the actual colours that can be seen directly.By establishing a knowledge link between the textual information and the physical colours in the collection, designers and users can systematically understand the structure of the knowledge network and conduct in-depth research on culture,as well as obtain the cultural background and connotation of the application of colours,so that the use of colours can be based on evidence, and the colours can be studied, without losing the cultural connotation in the modern innovation of traditional colours.
