China’s economy has developed quickly since the reform and opening up,and the extensive economic development model has resulted in social issues like excessive energy consumption, environmental pollution, structural imbalance, and widening income gaps.Industrial structure, which is the foundation of economic structure,is crucial for low-carbon energy development as well as for the kinetic energy conversion of economic growth. The quality of life for Chinese citizens has improved as a result of the country’s ongoing economic development, and medical technology has advanced along with a simultaneous decline in mortality and fertility rates, aggravating the problem of population aging that currently exists in society. The proportion of China’s population 65 and older increased from 5.6% in 1990 to11.4% at the end of 2017 according to pertinent statistics. The population’s aging has caused the demographic dividend to deteriorate, which has led to new demands for the driving force behind economic growth and is also having an impact on the modernization and optimization of the industrial structure. Therefore, research on how aging populations and changing industrial structures affect carbon emissions has some real-world applications. The interaction paths between population aging, industrial structure upgrading, and carbon emissions are examined in this thesis based on pertinent research, followed by analyses of the mediating, regulatory, nonlinear, and spatial spillover effects. For an empirical analysis, this thesis chooses data from 30 Chinese provinces and cities from 2011 to 2019,firstly,according to the intermediary effect,it can be seen that population aging will further affect carbon emissions by affecting industrial structure upgrading, and population aging will promote industrial structure upgrading.Further introducing digital finance development indicators and analyzing its impact on the conduction path of the three variables, the findings demonstrate that,on the one hand, the impact of population aging on carbon emissions is significantly negatively regulated by digital finance.,inhibition of carbon emissions by population aging increases with the intensity of digital finance;on the other hand, population aging has a stronger influence on modernizing industrial structures as digital finance intensity increases. The threshold effect states that the effect of aging populations on carbon emissions has a single threshold effect of improved industrial structure.,and no matter how much the industrial structure is upgraded, population aging has a significant positive effect on carbon emission intensity.According to the analysis from the perspective of space, carbon emissions and population aging have significant positive spatial correlations, and regional carbon emissions have significant spatial spillover effects on surrounding areas. At the national level,an increase in population ageing will lead to a corresponding increase in carbon emissions; With the adjustment and optimization of the industrial structure, carbon emissions will be reduced accordingly. Therefore, this thesis puts forward the following suggestions for the results of the study:(1)Utilize the aging population’s opportunity to promote the aging industry’s quick growth to the fullest.(2)Encourage the modernization and modification of the industrial structure, and quicken the change in the economic development paradigm.(3)Fully understand the differences in regional development and formulate relevant policy support according to local conditions.(4)Optimize the energy structure and promote the transformation of energy mode.
