Global climate change and ecological environment destruction caused by human activities have become significant global challenges facing the international community.Research shows that carbon emissions caused by residents’ consumption account for more than 70% of the whole, making the optimization of the consumption structure an important way to solve the problem. The domestic circulation development strategy, which aims to tap domestic demand, presents a challenge to fulfilling international commitments for carbon peaking and neutrality.Upgrading the consumption structure is the inevitable way to addressing challenges and achieving high-quality economic development.Given the constraints of the dual-carbon targets and dual-cycle development strategy, this paper studies on the carbon emissions resulting from residents’ consumption and aims to tap the carbon emission reduction potential of consumer lifestyle and behavior. It also seeks to provide a scientific basis for promoting low-carbon consumption, optimizing the consumption structure and achieving the carbon emission reduction. This study analyzes Chinese consumption characteristics from 2000 to 2020 and identifies insufficient consumption demand, low consumption willingness, and slow upgrading of consumption structure. The IPCC emission factor method is used to measure the direct energy consumption and carbon emissions of household consumption. The IO-CLA method is used to measure the indirect energy consumption and carbon emissions of consumption. It also identifies the impact factors of direct and indirect carbon emissions caused by household consumption and performs analysis using the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index decomposition method and the Structural Decomposition Analysis. The contribution rate of five factors of energy carbon emission intensity, energy consumption structure, energy consumption intensity, consumption level, and population size to direct carbon emission of household consumption are obtained;and the impact effect and contribution value of six factors of carbon emission intensity,input-output structure, consumption structure, consumption tendency, income level, and population size to indirect carbon emission of consumption are obtained. Finally, according to the effect of each influencing factor, the paper provides suggestions for household consumption emission reduction policies. The analysis of the calculation results confirm the fact that the rising carbon emission from consumption and the problem of indirect carbon emission from consumption is much more serious than that of direct-side.The results show that the consumption structure is the key to carbon emission reduction.Through factor decomposition analysis of the influencing factors,it is found that the direct carbon emission of residents’ consumption is mainly restrained by the intensity of energy carbon emission and energy consumption intensity, while energy consumption structure, consumption level, and population play a promoting role.Production-side factor represented by the input-output structure is the main factor in reducing indirect carbon emissions from consumption, and the sectoral carbon emission intensity also shows strong potential. The factors of residents’ final consumption have an incremental effect on the indirect carbon emissions, and the current extensive consumption structure plays a major driving role in it.It is worth paying attention that the effect of consumption structure has an inhibitory effect on the indirect carbon emissions caused by physical consumption such as food and clothing, indicating that the upgrading trend of residents’ consumption patterns has an obvious effect on the reduction of indirect carbon emissions. This paper argues that the future focus of resident’ consumption carbon emission reduction should be on the transformation of residential consumption patterns.Through the upgrading of the consumption structure,we could promote technological progress and energy efficiency improvement in the production sector.Realize the upgrading of the consumption structure focusing on low energy consumption and non-material consumption such as services, communications, and entertainment. Therefore, the paper puts forward policy recommenddations and implementation paths for carbon emission reduction in household consumption from consumption structure.
