Manufacturing is not only an engine driving economic growth,but also an important source of energy consumption and pollution emissions.With the continuous advancement of economic globalization and integration,countries participate in the global value chain to form a global trade division system.Although it brings huge economic benefits to developing countries,the cost of environmental pollution cannot be ignored.As two important manifestations of high quality economic development,green development has become an important connotation of China’s high quality economic development,and upgrading of the value chain is an internal requirement of high quality economic development.Therefore,in the context of China’s high-quality development,it is of great practical significance to study the impact and mechanism of the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry on the green development of manufacturing industry,provide basis for alleviating the above negative effects,and boost China’s ecological civilization construction and the comprehensive green transformation of economy and society,in order to realize the high-quality development of China’s economy.This paper focuses on the impact of global value chain upgrading on the green development of manufacturing industry.In the theoretical analysis,the relevant concepts are first defined and measured.Secondly,the influence mechanism of global value chain upgrading of manufacturing industry on green development of manufacturing industry is discussed.Chinese manufacturing industry can realize global value chain upgrading through four links: process upgrading,product upgrading,function upgrading and chain upgrading.From the perspective of green technology innovation as a mechanism variable,this paper holds that green technology innovation in manufacturing industry can promote the green development of manufacturing industry by realizing the green transformation of production process,improving energy utilization efficiency and promoting the production of green products.In terms of empirical analysis,panel data of global value chain upgrading and green development level of 14 Chinese manufacturing industries from 2007 to 2020 are selected as analysis samples.In the analysis of the current situation,it is found that the global value chain status index of most manufacturing industries has improved to different degrees,that is,the global value chain status has climbed.In recent years,the level of green development of most manufacturing industries has increased,but the level of green development of heavy polluting manufacturing industry is obviously lower than that of light polluting manufacturing industry.This paper empirically tests the overall effect of global value chain upgrading on the green development of manufacturing industry by constructing a two-way fixed effect model,and further introduces an interaction term to test the influence mechanism of the former on the latter.The findings are as follows:(1)On the whole,the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry significantly promotes the overall green development level of manufacturing industry.(2)After considering the heterogeneity of industries,it is found that the green development effect brought by the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry is significantly different among manufacturing industries with different pollution levels,which significantly improves the green development level of the heavily polluting manufacturing industry,but has no obvious effect on the green development level of the lightly polluting manufacturing industry.(3)The green development effect brought by the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry has heterogeneity among manufacturing industries divided by different technology levels,which significantly promotes the green development level of low-end manufacturing industry,but has no obvious effect on the green development level of high-end manufacturing industry.(4)From the perspective of mechanism test,the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry can promote the improvement of green development level through green technology innovation channels.Based on the research results,this paper draws some policy implications.China can promote the upgrading of global value chain of manufacturing industry and improve the green technology innovation capability of manufacturing enterprises by encouraging manufacturing industry to realize the climb of global value chain,strengthening the innovation of manufacturing enterprises,introducing combined policies and implementing differentiated policies in manufacturing industry.So as to realize the green development of manufacturing.
