To combat global warming,197 countries adopted the Grasse Climate Convention at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in 2021.China has also taken an active role in reducing carbon emissions, promising to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060.As a new growth point of China’s economy, digital economy has a significant impact on carbon emission reduction. On the one hand, the development of digital economy industry is conducive to promoting regional low-carbon development. On the other hand, the integration of digital economy and traditional industries will also help improve regional carbon emission efficiency. Therefore,it is theoretical and practical significance to study the impact of digital economy on carbon emission efficiency.Based on the review of relevant literatures and theoretical mechanisms of digital economy and carbon emission efficiency, this paper measured the digital economy level and carbon emission efficiency of 30 provinces in China, and analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics. At the same time, the general panel model, the intermediary effect model and the spatial Dubin model are established to test the impact of digital economy development on carbon emission efficiency, the influencing mechanism and whether there is a spatial spillover effect. The empirical results show that: first, from 2005 to 2020,the level of digital economy in all provinces has been improved to some extent, especially in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Pearl River Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and Sichuan. From 2005 to2020,the carbon emission efficiency of each province has improved to a certain extent, showing a decreasing trend from southeast to northwest in geographical dimension.Second, the digital economy and its two sub-dimensions can significantly improve the efficiency of carbon emissions, and the upgrading of industrial structure, energy structure, energy intensity and technological progress play an intermediary role. The impact of digital economy on carbon emission efficiency has significant regional and time heterogeneity.Third, digital economy has significant spatial spillover effect on carbon emission efficiency. The development of digital economy in one region can inhibit the improvement of carbon emission efficiency in geographically adjacent regions, but can promote the improvement of carbon emission efficiency in regions with similar economic levels. The improvement of carbon emission efficiency in one region will promote the improvement of carbon emission efficiency in the surrounding region. The policy implications are as follows:first, accelerate the development of digital economy, especially accelerate the development of digital industrialization;Second, promote industrial restructuring and upgrading, and develop environment-friendly industries;Third, speed up the adjustment of energy structure and improve energy efficiency.Fourth, enable science and technology to promote technological progress.
