| National health has always been highly valued by the government. However,in recent years, the continuous outbreak of air pollution incidents has aggravated people’s concerns and contributed residents to take measures.Scholars have conducted sufficient research on avoidance behaviors caused by air pollution, but most of their research are from a short-term perspective instead of a long-term perspective such as purchasing medical insurance.Consequently, this paper analyses the impact of air pollution on residents’ insurance purchasing in order to provide a long-term discussion of avoidance behaviors. In terms of content, this paper has carried out the following research.First,we summarized related researches as well as theory.Secondly,we interpreted the current situation of air pollution and medical insurance system in China. Finally, using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey data,we established models to empirically test how air pollution affects residents’ medical insurance coverage. The empirical conclusions are as follows:1.Air pollution increases residents’ insured probability of social medical insurance and commercial health insurance while decrease the probability of major illness insurance coverage.2.Individuals with better health tend to purchase commercial health insurance, while the other are more inclined to purchase social medical insurance.3.The level of education will affect individual’s choice of insurance types. The higher the level of education, the more likely it is to purchase supplementary medical insurance.4.Air pollution causes residents to suffer from various diseases, which leads to an increase in the probability of insurance purchasing.5.Air pollution makes residents feel pessimistic, which will reduce their enthusiasm for insurance. |
