Research On The Impact Of Environmental Regulation On Firm’s Export Trade Network

Since China’s accession to the WTO,China’s export trade has grown rapidly.In 2009,China surpassed Germany to become the world’s largest exporter.In the global export trade network system,China has risen from the second echelon in the top-level trade network to the first,and its position in the network has also shifted from the relative edge to the center,becoming the core hub.However,the rapid development of trade also inevitably brings a series of energy consumption and environmental pollution problems.In recent years,Chinese government has introduced a series of environmental regulation policies to achieve"win-win"of economy and environment,with obvious overall results.From the perspective of enterprises,whether the implementation of environmental protection policies will certainly promote the rapid transformation of enterprises and enhance their export competitiveness,so as to improve the status of export trade network.However,the existing research on the status of enterprises’export trade network focuses on its effects on exports and export value-added,and doesn’t pay attention to the impact of environmental regulations on the status of trade networks.Therefore,it is of theoretical and practical significance to research the impact of environmental regulation on the status of enterprises’ export trade networks.We first sort out and summarize relevant literatures on environment and trade,the influencing factors of trade network,and environmental regulation and enterprise development,explore the omissions of existing literature,and introduce the research topic of this paper as a starting point.Then we use the theory and empirical method to analyze the effect of environmental regulation on export trade network.At the theoretical level,we analyze in detail the channels that environmental regulation policies affect export trade networks and put forward two influence mechanisms,namely "intermediate inputs imports" effect and"productivity"effect.On the empirical level,taking the matching data of customs and industrial enterprises from 2007 to 2014 as samples,the country product level directional weighted trade network index is built based on PageRank algorithm and weighted to the enterprise level,and the Implementation Plan for Energy Saving and Low Carbon Action of 10000 Enterprises is used as a quasi-natural experiment to build a difference in difference(DID)model to study the effect of environmental regulation on the export trade network.The empirical results show that:(1)Environmental regulation significantly inhibits the promotion of enterprises’ export trade network status.(2)The heterogeneity test shows that the inhibition of environmental regulation on the export trade network status of domestic enterprises is greater than that of foreign enterprises;In terms of industries,environmental regulation inhibits the promotion of trade network status of enterprises in industries with high pollution levels,and have no significant effect on industries with low pollution levels;In terms of export intensity,environmental regulation significantly reduces the export trade network status of enterprises with low export intensity,but has no effect on enterprises with high export intensity;In terms of export products,environmental regulation inhibits the promotion of non-green export enterprises’ position in export trade network,and has no negative effect on green product export enterprises.(3)The impact channel test shows that environmental regulation reduces the amount,quantity and type of intermediate inputs imported by enterprises,and thus hinders the promotion of enterprises’position in export trade network;In addition,environmental regulation has inhibited the increase of enterprise productivity,leading to the decline of enterprise’ export trade network status.
