Chinese woodblock printed ancient books are material wealth with great splendor in the cultural history of the Chinese nation.The development of woodblock-printing technology has been applied since the Tang Dynasty,which has created a vast and voluminous process of ancient books after thousands of years,precious value of which still has a far-reaching impact on modern culture development.As the most intuitive external expression of woodblock printed ancient books,not onlythe feelling we brings the elegant and solemn temperament.But also followed by the deep and far-reaching cultural heritage of typography of ancient books from the rhythmic and regular line patterns.In this paper,the typography of woodblock printed ancient books in China is taken as the research object.Firstly,the historical evolution and era characteristics of the typography of woodblock printed ancient books since the Tang Dynasty are sorted out.The existing books of rarely noticeable Liao Dynasty,Jin Dynasty and other dynasties in the history of woodblock printing are sorted out and comprehensively analyzed to a certain extent according to ancient augural books and other series of books.It is found that these dynasties not only played an important role in the development of the typography of woodblock printed ancient books,but also had their own characteristics of the times.Secondly,with the historical development of typography,the disputes on the definition and function of various elements in the typography structure have been found.Initial application and style of some elements have some deviation and misunderstanding with the current academic interpretation of them.Individual typography elements should not be used again in the current ancient book records or edition appraisal in order to avoid ambiguity.As the outcome of culture,the design idea and aesthetic tendency of typography of woodblock printed ancient books fully reflect the outstanding creativeness and extraordinary wisdom of the ancients.The ancients placed their reverence for knowledge and culture,their love for life and their perception of the world in books,and conveyed the beautiful wishes for thousands of years through the external expression of typography.From the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty,the book engraving activity has always been a project that requires a lot of material and financial resources.The voluminous ancient books not only reflect the prosperity of the ancient book business,but also the economy,cultural,social trends and other objective conditions of their times.Although the typography is small,the social problems does reflects are really worth fully learning and understanding in combination with historical materials.The social conditions of the past dynasties had been unconsciously influencing on typography,details and overall style of ancient books at that time.The woodblock printed ancient books of ethnic minorities are also an indispensable part of the Chinese ancient book culture,the typography of which also presents a unique style and cultural connotation due to different ethnic cultures and religious beliefs.They are also an artistic treasure of Chinese culture,which provides more detailed and substantial data for our further comprehensive study on the historical development of the typography of Chinese woodblock printed ancient books.
