Although tea exists as a pure drink, its characteristics are fundamentally different from other drinks. In the process of long-term development, the Silla people have absorbed the essence of Chinese tea culture and combined with their national characteristics to form a unique, charming and systematic tea culture-Hwarang tea culture.According to the specific reality of the Korean Peninsula at that time,Hwarang looked back in the process of cultivating body and mind as well as tea activities, paid attention to practical application, further combined romantic Taoism with tea culture, and made a deeper interpretation of the contents of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism. This paper systematically combs the inflow and development process of Silla tea culture, and discusses the relationship between Hwarang and tea and the related contents of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism in Hwarang tea culture through the elaboration of Hwarang composition, romantic Taoism and self-cultivation activities in Silla period. In 562,Gaya tea culture gradually flowed into Silla, and Silla tea culture gradually developed. The royal family and nobles took tea as their daily favorite drink.Monks and Hwarang also enjoyed tea,and the tea drinking custom of Gaya continued.Influenced by the prosperous tea culture of the Tang Dynasty, the envoy of Silla sent the tea culture of the Tang Dynasty to Silla by going back and forth between the Tang Dynasty and Silla, which promoted the development of Silla tea culture. In order to meet the needs of tea drinking and give full play to the medicinal value of tea,tea trees of the Tang Dynasty were mass produced in Zhiyi mountain area during the king Xingde period, which really made Silla tea culture flourish. In the development of Silla tea culture,Hwarang and tea culture are closely linked. They interact and promote each other’s development. The core spirit of romantic Taoism inherited by Hwarang is harmony and carefree,so Hwarang’s tea drinking activities are not fixed in a closed space, but take nature as the background, contain all things and enjoy nature. In terms of internal connection, the romantic spirit of Hwarang romantic Taoism is the source of the spirit of tea ceremony on the Korean Peninsula and has an important impact on the emergence and development of Silla tea ceremony. In terms of external connection, tea maintains Hwarang’s physical and mental state in Hwarang’s cultivation activities and promotes the completion of cultivation activities. The core of Hwarang tea culture is romantic Taoism, which integrates the ideological content of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism.Through romantic Taoism,we can better grasp the content of Hwarang tea culture. In the organizational structure of Hwarang apprentices,Hwarang and apprentices have a deep friendship.Hwarang and apprentices taste tea in harmony, and always maintain a complementary relationship. They explore the Confucian concept of loyalty and filial piety as well as the five secular precepts in accumulating morality and cultivation. As a medium, tea transforms the relationship between superiors and subordinates into friendship, plays a good role in communication and exchange, and finally promotes the formation of the collective concept of “One Family and One Country”.Tea is a necessary drink for monk Hwarang to practice.Through active tea practice, monk Hwarang offered tea to Buddha and Bodhisattva. In this process, they understood the meaning of life in tea and gave birth to the spirit of “Integration of Zen and Tea”.Monk Hwarang activated their wisdom and popularized all sentient beings.Hwarang experienced the life of drinking tea in the cultivation activities, reflected the Taoist thought of being close to nature and integrating into nature in the recreational landscape, understood the mountains, rivers and the universe through drinking tea, experienced the wonderful feeling of integrating with mountains and rivers, explored the realm of “Integration of Heaven and Man”,understood the wisdom of life and the clarified spirit of the world,so as to finally purify himself and cultivate into immortals.
