In recent years, the rapid development of social economy and the improvement of people’s living standard have led to the relative shortage of water resources and the unbalanced consumption of virtual water in some cities and towns in Yunnan Province. As water resources and food are the important basis for the survival of human society,it is of practical value and importance to explore how to rationally allocate and efficiently use the virtual water for residents’ diets, which has become one of the water issues of common concern. The introduction of the concept of virtual water and the study of optimal allocation of water resources have opened up new ideas for people. The production and consumption of food are accompanied by the consumption of virtual water, and the quantitative study and optimal allocation of dietary virtual water can,to a certain extent, guide the optimal management of physical water resources. This paper discusses the optimal allocation of virtual water resources for Yunnan residents’ diets in the context of rational diet, and the main research contents and results are as follows:(1)By reviewing the basic definition, characteristic connotation and main indicators of virtual water and water footprint, introducing the quantification methods of virtual water and water footprint, exploring the issues of residents’ reasonable diet consumption pattern and nutrition structure pattern, and residents’ reasonable diet consumption structure and pattern, and providing the theoretical basis for the subsequent optimal allocation of virtual water resources for residents’ diet in Yunnan Province;(2)Taking the food consumption of major agricultural and livestock products by residents of 16 states(cities)in Yunnan Province from 2007 to 2020 as the research object, calculating the virtual water and water footprint in food according to Penman’s formula and applying Cropwat software, counting the virtual water of import and export, water footprint of consumption and regional water footprint, and providing data support for the subsequent optimization of the allocation of virtual water resources of residents’ diets in Yunnan Province;(3)Combining the contents of the Chinese Residents’ Dietary Guidelines and the Chinese Residents’ Balanced Diet Pagoda, attaching the concept of green ecology, nutrition and health to the traditional dietary structure of residents, proposing a reasonable dietary perspective, and setting constraints for the subsequent optimization of the allocation of virtual water resources of Yunnan residents’ diets;(4)It is proposed to set 2020 as the status quo year and 2025 as the planning year,to set corresponding constraints with the optimization objectives of maximizing the economic benefits of Yunnan residents’ diets, minimizing the virtual water of diets and maximizing the virtual water of consuming local products,to establish the optimal allocation model of virtual water resources of residents’ diets,to apply Matlab software and to choose genetic algorithm to solve the optimal allocation model, and to provide the best solution for effectively improving The study provides technical support to effectively improve the diet structure of Yunnan residents, efficiently use virtual water resources and save physical water resources. The results of the study show that the virtual water content of major agricultural and livestock products in 16 states(cities)of Yunnan from 2007 to 2020 varies under the influence of climate, precipitation and soil conditions, and the water footprint of Yunnan residents’ consumption shows signs of deviation from reasonable dietary consumption.Under the optimal allocation of virtual water resources for residents’ diets, the economic efficiency of all states and cities has improved, the self-supply rate of food has increased significantly, and the planting area of major agricultural products has been reduced, which indirectly saves physical water resources and provides data support and decision support for Yunnan residents’ reasonable dietary allocation and efficient use of virtual water.
