As an important component of the physical space environment of the ancient town, the street space is not only the supporting framework for the structure of the ancient town, but also an important link involving the public activities of the ancient town. The ancient town of salt transportation in southern Sichuan is thriving because of salt, but now it is gradually declining. However, many rare and ancient cultural features have also been preserved and inherited due to the physical records such as buildings, the texture of streets and alleys in the ancient town, and become an important carrier of specific regional culture. However, today’s uncertain and complex rapid modernization has had varying degrees of impact on the texture pattern of streets and alleys in the ancient town of salt transportation in southern Sichuan and the common memory of local residents. The transportation of salt in Sichuan is mainly by water and supplemented by land.It is transported from Zigong Salt Field in South Sichuan to major cities through the Yangtze River tributary.Yaoba Ancient Town and Shishi Ancient Town are typical hub towns for land and river transportation on the transportation belt.Under this background, this thesis takes Yaoba Ancient Town and Shishi Ancient Town as the research objects, with the help of the powerful data conversion and processing function of Arc GIS software, and in combination with the previous field survey, mapping and collected literature, collates a large number of basic spatial attribute data, spatial information and image information of streets and alleys in Yaoba Ancient Town and Shishi Ancient Town, and establishes a spatial database of streets and alleys in GIS,Realize the association and quick query of attribute data and spatial data, provide relevant data and technical support for the subsequent quantitative study of the spatial characteristics of streets and alleys in ancient towns, and carry out systematic analysis and research on the data according to relevant parameters and concepts,so that the research results are presented as visual thematic maps, and then can extract features and sort out relevant conclusions. This thesis enriches the application results of GIS technology in the research of small and medium-sized space, and introduces the theories of proportional scale, fractal dimension and collective memory of street and lane section to analyze the spatial characteristics of two ancient salt transportation towns from multiple aspects and angles. The development history of Yaoba Ancient Town and Shishi Ancient Town has deeply integrated various intangible spiritual cultures derived from the ancient salt road culture, which have evolved different ways of salt transportation and different street and lane spaces. However, both of them have encountered problems of protection and development under the influence of modern commercial transformation,as well as fragmentation of the common memory of residents. Therefore, based on the relevant conclusions, this thesis puts forward protection opinions on the healthy development of the streets and lanes of the ancient salt transportation town in South Sichuan,Balance the contradiction between historical and cultural protection and commercial development, deepen the residents’ sense of pride and belonging to the ancient town’s history and culture, and awaken the vitality of the street space of the ancient town.At the same time,it also increases the research results of the same type of ancient towns and the focus on the ancient salt road in Sichuan, and also puts forward new methods and ideas for the protection and renewal of ancient towns on the ancient salt road in Sichuan.
