General education believes that the main purpose of university education is to cultivate people,who are rational,high-quality,and possess extensive knowledge.The classic reading course is an important part of general education,and classic recommended books play an important role in what and how to read the classics.This thesis intends to understand the development history of classic education in American universities by combing the development context of classic reading courses in well-known American universities.Through research,the thesis summarizes the current situation of classic reading courses and classic recommended books in famous Chinese and American universities and the shortcomings of them,and clarifies the advantages of university libraries in participating in classic education.This thesis also selects classic reading courses and classic recommended books of Columbia University,University of Chicago,Fudan University and Nanjing University as examples for analysis and comparison.Combining China's national conditions and circumstances,this thesis summarizes the enlightenment of the United States to China and constructs an idealized classic reading curriculum system.In the introduction part,the thesis introduces the research background and significance,searches for related research,sorts out two parts about research at home and abroad,and demonstrates the research content and methods of this thesis.The main concepts are "famous universities","classics","classic education","classic reading course",and "classic recommended bibliography" are defined,and the theoretical basis is explained.Chapter 2 "Overview of Classic Reading Courses in famous American Universities" introduces the development background of classic reading courses in well-known American universities from both social and ideological backgrounds.From the beginning of the 20 th century,it has gone through the following stages: origin,climax,confusion,and revival,and new development.And by investigating the development of classic reading courses in 12 well-known American universities,this thesis summarizes the current status and controversy of classic reading courses in American universities,from the perspectives of classic reading courses,residential colleges,third classroom classic education,course bibliographies,and ACTC members.The bibliography of classic reading courses in American universities mainly analyzes the current situation of recommended bibliographies from the angles of course name,quantity,structure,recommended reasons and edition information.Chapter 3 "The present situation of Classic Reading Courses and Recommended Bibliographies in famous Chinese universities ",based on the standard of double first-class construction A-class universities,36 universities are identified as the survey objects,and the current status of classic reading courses and recommended bibliographies in these universities are investigated through the Internet survey method.From three aspects of classic reading courses,academy system and third classroom classic education,the thesis finds the shortcomings of classic education.In terms of classic recommended bibliographies,22 classic recommended bibliographies of universities are selected.From the perspectives of recommenders,time,number of bibliographies,structure,etc.,the thesis explore the shortcomings of classic recommended bibliography.And from the perspectives of reading resources,reading space and educational forms,it explains the advantages of university libraries embedded in classic education.Chapter 4 "Analysis and Comparison of Classical Reading Courses in Well-known Universities in China and the United States." From the perspectives of curriculum settings,course content and recommended bibliographies,and characteristics,the thesis conducts an in-depth study and analysis of Columbia University,University of Chicago,Fudan University and Nanjing University,the classic reading courses and recommended bibliographies of the four universities,and compare the differences between the classic reading courses of Chinese and American universities.Chapter 5 "The Enlightenment of American Classic Reading Courses and Recommended Bibliographies to Chinese" Aiming at the shortcomings of classic education in China,based on the experience of universities in China and the United States,and integrating Chinese national conditions,the thesis constructs an ideal classic reading curriculum system and gains enlightenment.First,optimize the classical reading curriculum system,starting from the perspectives of curriculum objectives,construction of curriculum groups and content,recommended bibliographies,teaching methods,teaching staff,and curriculum management.Second,promote the construction of classic education in the academy,from the perspective of setting up study groups and activities to highlight the spiritual core of the academy.Third,university libraries strengthen their awareness of participating in classic education,build classic reading collection resources,participate in curriculum construction and innovate classic education forms.Chapter 6,"Conclusion",this chapter summarizes the research content and methods of the full thesis,and enumerates the limitations and deficiencies of the research.
