With the advantages of low cost, the ability to manufacture complex-shaped parts, and high material utilization,3D printing has been widely used in various fields of society, such as industrial production, medical, military, and aerospace. In the 3D printing process, the layering process of 3D models is a key aspect, which has a large impact on the print quality and printing accuracy. The traditional 3D printing layering process is to use a set of isometric planes to intersect with the 3D model to obtain a2 D slice layer of the 3D model. The 3D printed parts using this method for layering process have low printing accuracy, easy to produce staircase effect, support and other problems. To solve some of these problems, this paper proposes a multi-axis hybrid slicing and layering printing algorithm based on the 3D model in STL file format. The main work is as follows.(1)A hybrid surface and plane layering algorithm based on model segmentation is proposed. The topological relationship is established for the STL file format 3D model, and the surface is extracted quickly;the biased surface is used to segment the3 D model;the plane layering and surface layering are applied to different areas of the model to obtain the model layering contour.(2)According to the obtained layered contour, the print path is filled. The clipper library's cropping and biasing algorithms are used to fill the contour bias and scan line paths in the planar layered contours;the curved paths with variable angles are filled in the curved layered contours by intersecting the planar and approximate surfaces;and the multi-axis print paths are obtained by post-printing processing for the BC-type5-axis printer with RTCP function.(3)Hybrid layered printing software development.Using Python and Py Qt to develop multi-axis hybrid layering software to automate multi-axis hybrid layering.(4)Machining simulation and printing experiment. The hybrid layered printing experiments were completed using a parallel-arm 3D printer, and the resulting printed parts were compared with the printed samples using planar layering alone to prove the effectiveness of the hybrid layering algorithm.Multi-axis hybrid layering printing experiments were completed in the additive manufacturing simulation module of VERICUT software to demonstrate the feasibility of the multi-axis hybrid layering algorithm.
