As the pace of rural education revitalisation continues to accelerate, whether the quantity and quality of the rural teaching force can meet the needs of rural education has become a focal point of national concern. The professionalism of rural teachers is not only an important criterion for measuring the quality of teachers, but also a need to realise their professional development.Focusing on teachers’ independent learning and giving full play to their autonomy in professional development has become a necessary move to enhance the professional quality of rural teachers. This paper is based on a questionnaire survey of rural primary school teachers in County C of City D,supplemented by in-depth interviews,in order to clarify the current situation of rural primary school teachers’ self-directed learning and its influencing factors. The survey found that the current level of independent learning of rural primary school teachers is at a medium to low level, and that teachers need to optimise their independent learning in terms of content selection, time investment in independent learning, independent learning methods, independent learning process control and independent learning results application, and there are differences in the level of independent learning of different types of teachers. The exploratory factor analysis reveals that the main factors affecting the level of independent learning of rural primary school teachers are policy protection, school support and teacher motivation, which are reflected in the fact that teachers do not receive sufficient external support in independent learning and their own awareness of independent learning is limited. Therefore,in order to improve the level of independent learning of teachers in rural primary schools and enhance the internal driving force of teachers’ professional development,it is necessary to start from three levels: macro, meso and micro, and effectively play the role of policy protection, school support and teacher motivation in promoting teachers’ independent learning.Firstly,at the macro level, policy provisions need to be refined to strengthen the protection of teachers’ self-directed learning, and publicity needs to be strengthened to clarify the value of teachers’ self-directed learning.Secondly,at the meso-organisational level,we need to build learning platforms to enrich teachers’ independent learning resources and improve management measures to enhance teachers’ capacity for independent learning. Finally,at the micro personal level, teachers need to establish the concept of lifelong learning and carry out independent learning consciously;make full use of external resources to enrich independent learning methods;reflect scientifically and effectively to improve independent learning plans.
