One of the basic concepts of the GCSE Biology Curriculum Standards(2017edition 2020 revision)is to take the core literacy as the purpose and the content focuses on the big concept.It emphasizes on the subject's big concept and develops students' abilities to meet the needs of social development and individual life.Currently,how to let the curriculum content focus on big concept and use big concept teaching to cultivate students' core literacy should be a worthy studying topic."Substance and energy conversion" is an important part of "substance and energy concept" in the core literacy of biology of life concept.Based on it,this study adopts methods of literature reviews,questionnaires and case analysis.Firstly,through literature reviews,research status of "big concept teaching" and "core literacy" at home and abroad is revealed,and to clarify the relevant theoretical foundation and the further significance of the research.What's more,key concepts are defined,clarifying their connotations.Secondly,a questionnaire survey is used to investigate the current situation of fostering students' core literacy in biology teaching in high school in Fuyang,Anhui province.Then,the problems are analyzed and corresponding suggestions are proposed.According to it,effective teaching strategies are elaborated to optimize the teaching design of high school biology with the example of "substance and energy conversion" and to improve the teaching effect.Finally,typical classroom cases are analyzed to provide reference for teachers to implement big concept teaching and cultivate students' core literacy.This study shows that in actual teaching practice,it is still difficult to develop big concept teaching.The questionnaire survey reveals some existing problems,such as the teachers' theoretical knowledge reserve needs to be improved,and the teachers' teaching concept of teaching big concepts under the guidance of high school entrance examination needs to be improved.The implementation of big concept teaching can enhance students' concept learning logically and actively,help students construct a complete curriculum knowledge system,and promote the formation and development of students' core literacy in biology.
