In order to implement Xi Jinping’s thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics for a new era and the spirit of the 19 th Party Congress,the General Office of the State Council promulgated the“Opinions on Implementing the Project of Inheritance and Development of Excellent Chinese Traditional Culture”.This shows the importance attached to the education of traditional culture at the national level.As an important vehicle for implementing education on traditional culture,the presentation of textbook plays an important role in the teaching of various subjects.The “Chemistry Curriculum Standards of General High School(edition 2017 revised in 2020)”include the requirement to select the chemistry textbook should focus on the integration of science and humanities.Therefore,it is of great practical importance to analyse and study the presentation forms of traditional culture in chemistry textbook.The presentation of different types of traditional culture can play a crucial role in students’ understanding of chemistry and production,life,science and technology and in developing their core literacy and patriotism in the subject of chemistry.In this paper,compulsory textbook(2019 edition)and optional textbook of the People’s Education Press high school chemistry were selected for the study.The presentation of traditional cultural contents in the introduction,text,columns,illustrations and exercises sections of the textbook of the People’s Education Press were systematically counted and analyzed.The application of traditional culture in teaching was also investigated in conjunction with student questionnaires and teacher interviews to provide reference for high school chemistry teachers to fully exploit the textbook.The study shows that:(1)The introduction presents a richer content of traditional culture,running through civilization from ancient to modern times,focusing on combining humanism with the development of chemistry and enhancing students’ national self-confidence and pride.(2)The traditional culture in the main text is presented in four categories:literature,traditional technology,traditional food and traditional medicine.Each of these categories has a different focus and provides ideas for the preparation of questions for the college entrance examination.The content presented is in line with the cognitive rules of students and focuses on the close connection with chemical knowledge.(3)The traditional culture presented in the columns is contemporary and applied.It enriches students’ knowledge structure from multiple perspectives and deepens their understanding of the subject of chemistry.It fully reflects the constructivism of learning and cultivates students’ comprehensive literacy.(4)The illustrations are mainly divided into three categories: illustrations of ancient cultural relics,traditional techniques and natural medicines.The different types of illustrations make the textbook graphic and the curriculum more vivid.The illustrations make traditional culture concrete from many angles and improve students’ ability to read and interpret pictures.It makes it easier for students to understand the connotations of traditional culture in their studies.(5)There are three types of traditional culture exercises in the textbook:canonical records,traditional techniques and proverbs.The format of presentation is in line with the current format of questions in the The national college entrance examination.The questions use the canonical records as the background of the examination and focus on developing students’ ability to extract and integrate information.The subjective questions focus on improving students’ daily accumulation.They help to develop students’ ability to integrate information and to deal with traditional culture-based questions in the the college entrance examination.In conclusion,the analysis of the presentation of traditional culture in the high school chemistry textbook of the People’s Education Press is helpful to develop the hidden resources and explicit resources in the textbook,and has important educational value and significance for the transmission and promotion of traditional culture.
