For the sake of improving the key competencies of Chinese students and cultivating innovative talents with creative education, the Ministry of Education has launched a comprehensive revision of curriculum standards for various subjects in senior high schools. As for Information Technology,it proposes new requirements to enhance students’ information awareness, computational thinking and innovation capacity;follows the pace of the times by introducing new technologies, such as 3D Printing,Artificial Intelligence,Internet of Things, etc.;and sets up new modules including 3D Design and Creativity and Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence for students’ personalized development. It has been an increasingly prominent task to actively design the new contents of school curriculum. As a positive response to China’s advocacy of key competencies,3D Design can greatly enhance students’ computational and creative thinking, and cultivate their all-round ability in mathematics,art,technology,etc..With the popularity of maker concept, maker education emerges in our country as the times require. The ideas and teaching modes of maker education will greatly improve students’ hands-on ability, sense of innovation and logical thinking, which conforms to the requirements of new curriculum standards of Information Technology. In the context of maker education, can the 3D Design dig out greater value of the course itself? Therefore, the author, according to the new curriculum standards of information technology and the current situation of our school, designs the school-based course of 3D Design based on the concept of maker education, thus cultivating students’ key competencies.Besides, the course has been applied to classroom teaching in junior high schools, hoping to provide references for other educators and researchers. This paper can be divided into five major parts. In the introduction, the background and significance of this study, the domestic and foreign research status, the research subjects and research methods are briefly explained. In the second part, the relevant concepts are defined, and the theories of curriculum development are elaborated. In the third part, the design and development of 3D Design,a school-based course,in junior high school is elaborated in detail, including current condition analysis, settings of objectives, selection of contents, design of teaching cases and arrangement of course contents, thus setting up its overall framework. Then, its teaching modes for schools are designed purposefully based on China’s five-step teaching method, which is further applied to the classroom teaching of 3D Design. Finally, the evaluation scheme of this course is expounded. In the fourth part, attention has been paid to the application and improvement of 3D Design.Taking the author’s school as the pilot basis, the comparative teaching between maker education and traditional education is carried out in three classes of Grade 1.The two theoretical classes, respectively Block Castle and Future Automobile, are selected as the teaching cases, which show the instructional design and implementation process based on six steps of classroom teaching. After the pilot project, the applicability and rationality of 3D Design are proved via final examinations, questionnaire surveys and interviews, and the improvements are put forward to optimize it.In addition, the comparison of students’ works and questionnaire surveys under these teaching methods has verified the conjecture that maker education is beneficial for the cultivation of students’ comprehensive ability and key competencies. In the fifth part, the research findings are summarized, the advantages and disadvantages of this research are analyzed, and the future development of 3D Design, the school-based course,is prospected.
