In order to meet the need of talents in the development of the times, cultivating students’ innovative consciousness has become the basic task of modern mathematics education. It is the foundation of innovation for students to find and ask questions by themselves.Cultivating their ability to ask questions should start from the stage of compulsory education and run through mathematics education.Students participate in the teaching process by actively asking questions, which not only activates the mathematics classroom atmosphere, but also satisfies students curiosity for exploring unknown things. In such a way, students will be more willing to learn, and establish interests for the further learning in mathmatics field. At the same time, students’ initiative to ask questions is also of great significance to develop their critical questioning ability and overcome the thinking pattern. However, for a long time, primary school mathematics education has only attached the importance to improve students’ ability to gain knowledge and solve problems, but the development of students ability to ask questions has not achieved.Under this background, this study will investigate and analyze the development of the questioning ability in mathematics class of primary school students. This study divides the formation mechanism of students’ questioning ability into three aspects:problem awareness, problem discovery and problem expression.Based on this dimension, the students and teachers of a primary school in Zhengzhou city are surveyed through the questionnaire survey method, interview method and the classroom observation method. This research analyzes and explores the status of primary school students’ questioning ability, discusses the reasons that affect the development of student questioning ability, and provides teaching strategies to promote the development of students’ questioning ability. The survey results show some problems in the primary school mathematics classroom, such as students’ little desire to ask questions, the lack of courage to ask questions, the weak ability to find problems, superficial problem discovery and weak problem expression ability. The reasons for these problems are internal and external. The main internal reasons are: students’ lack of interest in mathematics learning, the fear of teachers’ authority, shyness in psychology, and weak ability to criticize and question; The external reasons mainly include teacher’s authoritarianism, knowledge orientation evaluation, singleteaching methods, single course resources and teachers’ less guidance on students’ questioning skills. Finally,in order to promote the development of students’ ability to ask questions, this study proposes targeted teaching strategies.Teachers should improve teaching strategies and enhance students’ awareness of questions;Teachers can strengthen questioning guidance and enhance students’ ability to ask questions;Teachers should teach presentation skills and promote students to ask questions fluently.
