After the Second World War,although there is no large-scale war break out, regional conflicts continue. The UN peacekeeping operation has been developed under such circumstances. The United States has become an active participant of the UN peacekeeping operation since World War ?,including the operation in Somalia.Due to the lack of judgement and the deviation from the original intention, the US lost in the battle of Mogadishu and withdrew from the war.It can be concluded from the changes in US policy before and after the failure of the UN peacekeeping in Somalia that when the US believes that peacekeeping in Somalia is beneficial to its national interests,it actively participates, and when the peacekeeping in Somalia shakes American interests, the United States immediately withdraws. In conclusion, the UN diplomacy of the US is a tool that serves its domestic interests and is affected by the them. The US's support to the UN depends on whether it is beneficial to the interests of the US,which reflects the utilitarian diplomatic characteristics of the United States. The failure in Somalia also reveals the problem of major powers interfering with peacekeeping operations. The failure experience reminded us to provide more autonomy to the UN and fully respect its principles. To prevent the tragedy in Somalia happens again,in the end of the essay,I will talk about how major powers can better handle their relations with the UN.
