Paper Money Printing Technology And Its Relationship With The Financial Industry In Modern Shanghai (1840-1949)

From the end of the 19^th century to the middle of the 20^th century,banknote printing technology is in a stage of transition from traditional technology to new technology.As a city arising from business,modern Shanghai has obvious advantages in terms of location,history and culture,as well as in finance and technology.Therefore,it is very typical to choose modern Shanghai as the research area of this paper.At present,there are mostly research results on paper currency printing and the banking industry,but there are few studies on the development of paper money technology in modern Shanghai from the perspective of technology history and financial history.In view of this,this paper intends to take interdisciplinary research as a starting point and regard the evolution of traditional financial institutions as an entry point.Comprehensively and systematically analyze the paper money printing technology and the main body of paper money issuance as a whole,and deepen the understanding of the concepts of"technology"and"finance"in the history of science and technology and philosophy of science and technology.This paper not only overcomes the single research field of view of technology,but also closely connects with technology,and realizes the novelty of research methods and the diversity of research content.In order to clarify the geographical advantages of Shanghai and the prerequisite for the issuance of banknotes,this paper collects some documents from 1840 to 1949,and subdivides the changing process of banks in combination with the large-scale and phased small-scale of the century.At the same time,compare the location characteristics of foreign banks and domestic banks from the spatial dimension.Among them,the first-hand historical materials come from the Shanghai bank museum,the Shanghai archives(the new bund museum)and the second historical archives of China,supported by other materials.Since the 1860s,the issuance of banknotes has been very chaotic.In the late 1930s,with the transformation of Shanghai to the government intervention development mode,technology has been rising.The author analyzes the technical mechanism of the banknotes of typical national banks(bank of China,bank of communications,farmers bank of China,central bank and the people's bank of China)in different historical stages.Furthermore,this paper excavates what kind of technological changes will be made by banknote printing technology in the face of the contraction of the financial system,which reflects the law of modern Shanghai's paper money issuance industry from being scattered and tending to be unified.By establishing a certain correspondence between finance and technology,the author discovered that the progress of science and technology,the development of social economy,and the evolution of the banking industry have all promoted the development of Shanghai banknote printing technology to a certain extent.As a result,technological advancement has optimized the team of printing technology talents,and at the same time the interaction with the society has become closer.In order to deeply analyze the consistent relationship between technology and financial institutions,this paper focuses on multi-level research.The author found that the history of banknote printing and financial history in Shanghai is not only a response to the demands of modern economic development,but also a complex process of collision,recognition,rejection and continuous innovation between Chinese and Western cultures.The old and new things and the old and new technologies present a trend of fusion that complements each other,interacts,and advances together.A comprehensive study of the stage characteristics of technology and finance in the typical area of modern Shanghai is helpful to reveal the inherent laws of modern Shanghai's financial industry under the background of the intersection of technology,culture and finance.Moreover,this paper provides a reference for further exploring the motivation and significance of the change of modern Shanghai banknote printing technology.It not only has academic value,but also has practical significance.
