Positive Discourse Analysis Of China Daily's Poverty Alleviation News Discourses From The Perspective Of Evaluation Theory

In 2021,China announced to the world that it had achieved a milestone victory in poverty eradication and eradicated absolute poverty.In this process,China Daily has shared China’s active moves with readers at home and abroad.Therefore,this thesis samples 43 news poverty alleviation news and conducts a Positive Discourse Analysis based on the Appraisal Theory.The aim is to interpret the positive content and analyze how the news constructs positive discourse by using appraisals.After the analysis,it is found that: First,positive attitude resources are extensively used,setting a positive tone for the discourse.Among the sub-attitude resources,appreciation and judgment resources are heavily used,showing that the discourse emphasizes the achievements and results of poverty alleviation.Second,Engagement analysis shows that by using attribution resources heavily,lots of real voices are introduced to influence readers’ attitude;and by using entertain resources,the future duty and the obligation of the government are expressed.In addition,dialogue contraction resources enrich the positive connotation of poverty alleviation by stressing its own voice.Third,force resources of Graduation are extensively used to express a strong attitude towards antipoverty and to emphasize the changes after poverty alleviation.Finally,it is found that with a few affect resources,the huge proportion of appreciation,attribution,and quantitative resources indicates that the discourse starts from objectivity and truthfulness so that it can leave the positive aspects to facts.To sum up,by investigating the relationship between appraisal resources and positive discourse comprehensively,this thesis can enrich research on discourse analysis and on poverty alleviation news,and it can also help emphasize the value of China’s poverty alleviation.
