Positive Discourse Analysis Of China Daily’s News Reports On CIIE From The Perspective Of Appraisal Theory

China International Import Expo(CIIE)is the world’s first large-scale nationallevel exhibition themed on imports.It has attracted much attention since it was held,and there are a lot of relevant reports about it.This study mainly selects 60 articles from China Daily’s reports on the third CIIE during its conference as data,and uses UAM Corpus as a marking tool to conduct positive discourse analysis under the framework of appraisal theory,aiming to make a study about the following three questions:(1)What is the distribution of appraisal resources in terms of attitude,engagement and graduation system in China Daily’s news reports on CIIE?(2)What kinds of positive meaning do the attitude,engagement and graduation resources of China Daily’s news reports on CIIE convey ?(3)How do the attitude,engagement and graduation resources of China Daily’s news reports on CIIE convey positive meaning?Through analysis,this research mainly has the following findings:First,from the perspective of the distribution of appraisal resources,there are 2221 words used as appraisal resources in the selected reports.Among them,attitude resources occupy the largest proportion,followed by engagement resources,and graduation resources used least.This shows that the reports are more to evaluate the role of CIIE and construct positive meaning through attitude resources.And then,judging from the positive meaning conveyed in the report by the attitude,engagement and graduation resources,the report mainly conveys to readers China’s determination to promote win-win cooperation,share opportunities and markets,and build a community with a shared future.At the same time,the report also conveys the important role and reliable image of CIIE as China’s first import exhibition in promoting Chinese imports and promoting international cooperation and development.In addition,the report looks forward to the development prospects of CIIE by the use of appraisal resources,so as to encourage more countries to participate in it.Finally,from the perspective of constructing positive meaning,the report is more inclined to directly convey the image of China and the role and development prospects of the CIIE by using a large number of appreciation resources under attitude system,expand resources of heterogloss in engagement system,and force resources in graduation system.At the same time,the report combines some judgment and effect resources in attitude system,contract resources of heterogloss in engagement system,and focus resources in graduation system to indirectly convey the positive meaning of the CIIE and the positive attitude of the participants,and weaken the negative information about the CIIE.All in all,this article provides readers with a deeper understanding of the importance of CIIE and China’s image as a great power through a positive discourse analysis of China Daily’s reports on the third CIIE.At the same time,this study is also an expansion of positive discourse analysis in news research which has certain reference significance for future related research.
