| The white paper of China is an official document published by the government on major political,economic,social,diplomatic and other issues,representing the government’s position and views.Poverty and its related problems,such as hunger,disease and social conflicts,seriously hinder mankind’s pursuit of a better life.In order to record China’s great journey in eliminating absolute poverty and share its experience and practices in poverty alleviation with the world,the Chinese government issued a white paper entitled China’s Poverty Alleviation on April 6,2021.This white paper introduces a series of effective measures taken by the Chinese government to help people relieve poverty and live a happy life.Positive Discourse Analysis(PDA)advocates using a positive attitude to solve various problems in society and hopes to build a harmonious society.Therefore,based on Appraisal Theory,this thesis conducts a PDA of the English version of the white paper China’s Poverty Alleviation published by The State Council Information Office.In the process of corpus processing,this study uses UAM Corpus Tool6.2e to annotate and make statistics on appraisal resources,so as to summarize the types and distribution characteristics of appraisal resources used in the white paper,and further explore the positive discourse meanings constructed by these appraisal resources in the white paper.It is found that the three subcategories of appraisal resources all exist in the white paper,including attitude resources,engagement resources and graduation resources.Among them,the use of graduation resources is the most,followed by attitude resources,and engagement resources are the least.In the attitude system,the number of judgement resources is the largest,which shows the firm determination,high sense of responsibility and strong ability of the Chinese government to achieve comprehensive victory in poverty alleviation,as well as the excellent quality of the Chinese people who are not afraid of hardship and hard work.In the engagement system,the number of contraction resources is more than that of expansion resources.The frequent use of contraction resources in the white paper reflects the authority of the language,which demonstrates the attitude and stance of the Chinese government to win the battle against poverty and adhere to the people-centered philosophy,helping to win the trust and support of the public.In the graduation system,the number of force resources is much more than that of focus resources.Through the application of a large number of force resources,the white paper strengthens the positive attitude towards a series of measures taken by the Chinese government to help people out of poverty,and further displays the government’s ability and responsibility.At the same time,it enhances the public’s positive attitude towards the achievements of the government.In addition,the use of large amounts of data also reflects the accuracy and objectivity of China’s poverty alleviation results,enhancing the credibility and authority of the white paper content.Through the PDA of the white paper,this study can help people understand the positive meanings embodied in the white paper more deeply.On one hand,China’s poverty alleviation practice fully demonstrates the Chinese spirit,Chinese value and Chinese strength,which can help people understand the great spirit of the Chinese nation in poverty alleviation.On the other hand,sharing China’s experience in poverty alleviation with the rest of the world shows China’s important role in building a community with a shared future for mankind without poverty and with common development.Meanwhile,it displays China’s image as a capable and responsible major socialist country.And it is of positive significance to the building of a harmonious society. |
