Cultural learning is an important part of English learning and plays a key role in improving the comprehensive quality of English learners.According to the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 edition,2020 revision),hereinafter referred to as “New Curriculum Standard”.The key competencies of English subject consist of four dimensions: language ability,cultural awareness,learning ability and thinking quality.In addition,English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017 Edition,2020 Revision)indicated that cultural awareness reflects the value orientation of the key competencies of English subjects.However,the cultivation of cultural awareness in actual high school English teaching remains to be investigated.Under the guidance of Cross-cultural Communication Theory and Schema Theory,this study investigates the current situation of cultural awareness cultivation in high school English teaching from the perspective of key competencies,and analyzes the problems existing in the cultivation of students’ cultural awareness in high school English teaching and the causes behind the problems from the perspectives of teachers and students.This study adopts the methods of questionnaire,interview and classroom observation,taking a senior high school in Fuxin as an example,and selects four classes and four teachers of grade one in senior high school as the research object.This study attempts to answer the following three questions:1.What is the current situation of culture awareness cultivation in senior high school English teaching from the perspective of the key competencies?2.What are the problems in the cultivation of culture awareness in senior high school English teaching from the perspective of the key competencies?3.What are the causes of the problems in cultivation of culture awareness in senior high school English teaching from the perspective of the key competencies?Through the research,the author draws the following conclusions: First of all,students’ cultural knowledge reserve is insufficient but they have a positive attitude towards learning cultural knowledge,patriotism,national identity and cultural equality.In addition,since the 2017 Curriculum Standard was promulgated five years ago,English teachers have had a preliminary understanding of the cultivation of cultural awareness,but how to implement cultural knowledge teaching and cultural awareness cultivation in teaching remains to be explored and improved.Secondly,the main problems in the cultivation of cultural awareness in high school English teaching are the insufficiency of students’ cultural awareness,the insufficiency of teachers’ use of textbooks and the insufficiency of teaching design ability.Thirdly,from the perspective of key competencies,the main reasons for the problems in the cultivation of cultural awareness in senior high school English teaching are the influence of the social exam-oriented environment,the lack of a good environment for the cultivation of cultural awareness and the lack of integration of textbook contents.The implications of this research are as follows: Firstly,the school should provide teachers with training related to cultivation of culture awareness to improve teachers’ understanding of culture awareness and the ability of it.Secondly,teachers should pay more attention to cultural hotpot knowledge and topics that students are interested in,and integrate them into classroom teaching.Thirdly,teachers should strive to improve teaching methods,prepare lessons carefully,and improve the ability of teaching design.
