The teaching of reading plays an important role in English teaching in senior high schools.The relationship between literature and language teaching has always been one of the controversial topics in the teaching circles at home and abroad.With the popularity of the communicative approach,the proportion of literary classics has decreased significantly.High school students' English reading is limited and narrow.As authentic language materials,English classics are rich and interesting in content and flexible in language,creating a good environment for students to learn English,promoting their understanding of foreign cultures and increasing their confidence in other discourse types.However,they have not been properly applied in high school.Therefore,this paper takes the No.3 Senior high school of Liupanshui City in Guizhou Province as an example to conduct an empirical study on the influence of English classics reading teaching on students' English reading interest and reading ability.The theoretical basis of this study is input hypothesis,humanistic theory,affective filter hypothesis,and cultural linguistics.This study adopts qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods,using questionnaire survey,pre-test and post-test,interview and other experimental methods to collect data,and use spss26.0statistical software for data analysis.The research object is senior one students of No.3middle school in Liupanshui,Guizhou Province.The main research questions of this paper are the influence of English classics reading on senior high school students' reading interest and the influence of English classics reading on senior high school students' reading ability.It is found that English classics stimulate high school students' interest in reading,improve students' comprehensive language ability and improve English teaching effect.However,the effect is different for students at different levels,especially for students with good English foundation.Students with a good foundation are more likely to read English original works,while those with a weak foundation prefer to read simplified classics.At the same time,the reading in the experimental class before and after the experiment was significantly improved,indicating that reading English classics can effectively improve students' reading ability,which provides a reference for theextensive application of English classics suitable for students' learning level in high school English reading teaching.
