Teaching of English reading is an important link in the process of cultivating student’s reading ability in the stage of senior high school.With the advancement of English new curriculum reform and the promotion of core competence of English discipline,the reading of English masterpieces has become more and more important supplementary part in the English teaching of senior high school.How to help students make better use of reading English masterpieces to improve their English reading competence has become a question which is not to be underestimated in the teaching process.There are many researches on reading English masterpieces by scholars at home and abroad,but most of these researches focus on English teaching in primary schools,junior high schools or colleges and universities.However,they seldom do research on the positive connections between the reading of English masterpieces and the improvement of English reading competence.Firstly,this paper illustrates the necessity of reading English masterpieces in senior high school.This part introduces the current situation and analyzes main problems in English masterpieces reading.Secondly,this paper puts forward the practical “Five-step”approach to do the research on the improvement of senior high school students’ English reading competence by reading English literary masterpieces.Furthermore,this paper is mainly based on the theory of Pedagogy constructivism and comprehensible input for the reading teaching model.Finally,in order to verify the validity of this model,this paper selects 100 students who are from two classes in their first grade、second grade and third grade of a senior high school in Liaocheng,as the subjects.And the experiment has been conducted for three years.Before the experiment,the author makes a survey of the understanding and practice of the English reading and then carries out a training program for the subjects and a teaching negotiation with them.In order to select the parallel classes we compared students’ English scores in two classes.During the experiment,the“five-step approach of the English masterpieces reading”is adopted in the experimental class,while a common method in the control class.After the experiment,the author collects the experimental data by using the questionnaire platform to support the positive effect of the English masterpieces reading on the improvement of English reading competence in senior high school.The SPSS 23 software is used to collect the scores of students.It aims to illustrate active impact on students’ English literary reading in senior high school by comparing the scores.Interviewing is to confirm students’ improvement in the process of English reading and the feeling changes.It is found that the English masterpieces reading can stimulate students’ reading interest and help to improve students’ English reading competence.Therefore,this paper could provide reference and inspiration for the development of reading teaching in senior high school in China.
