Light verbs refer to those that convey less content meaning than regular verbs, and play a syntactic role in correaponding structures, such as person, tense, and number. The meaning of the structure is mainly determined by the object of the verb, termed as the deverbal noun. The English light verb structures have been a hot research focus in the field of linguistics.Current literature covers a variety of research findings concerning syntax, semantics and stylistic features. However, there is comparatively less research on the constraints of nominalization of the verbs in such structures.Taking the “give a N(v)” structure as the research object, this thesis aims to explore the constraints of Verb-to-Noun conversion in this structure. The analatic instrument for this research is the “Action Chain Theory” proposed by Professor Langacker, which claims that the behavior and state described by the corresponding clauses can be represented by the participants and the way of energy transmission. With this theoretical framework,it is analyzed the participant roles and the energy transmission involved in the “give a N(v)” structure, generalizing the common features of the verbs accepted as nouns in this structure. The linguistic data here are collected from BNC.Totally 3618 samples meeting the criteria of the research objects are selected and classified into 6 categories. The outcomes of this research include:(1)The verb that enters the “give a N(v)” structure can be given by the agentive subject;(2)The “give a N(v)” structure does not allow the indirect object to initiate an active behavior in the action chain,so some causative verbs causative verbs that carry subjective meaning cannot enter this structure;(3)The verb entering the structure must follow the path: the energy is emitted by the agentive subject, transmitted through the tools that may exist, repesented in the form of “N(v)”,transmitted to the indirect object if it exists;(4)The energy trasmits in one direction,so verbs that emphasize energy feedback cannot enter this structure. The research findings, theoretically, provide a cognitive linguistic view on the phenomenon of nominalization in the light verb structures in terms of analyzing dimension and theoretical reference;meanwhile, practically this research is of literature value for English light verb teaching, testing, and lexicography.
