The source text “Individual differences in the interpretation of ambiguous statements about time” is selected from the first issue of the journal Cognitive Linguistics(2014).It was written by Dr.Sarah Duffy from Northumbria University and Dr.Michele Feist from University of Louisiana at Lafayette.The source text is an innovative study on linguistics and has a significant academic value for the study of spatial and temporal metaphors.By carrying out a text analysis,this report summarizes the translation problems and translation strategies.In the case analysis,the translation of nominal structures,cohesive devices and modes of thematic progression are probed into thoroughly.In translation of nominalization,reduction,amplification,conversion,rank-shift are used.On the sentential level,repetition,amplification,and splitting are analyzed.In translation of modes of thematic progression,literal translation and restructuring are adopted.We hope that this report can shed some light on academic translation.
