The present paper is a translation report on Chinese translation of Chapter one of Part two of Family Law in the U.S.A.This chapter gives a macroscopic description of the marriage history and its development with a brand-new perspective of marital institution of the United States of America.Nominalization, being an explicit linguistic characteristic in the academic work, has greatly challenged the author in the translation. While translating nominalization, the author finds that parts of speech of the target text seldom corresponds with that of the source text;the rigid target language has greatly affected the readability of the Chinese version. In order to get through the challenge, the author had taken as reference a series of academic works and practical texts about the translation methods and techniques concerning nominalization for preparations. And translation practice of the source text suggests that literal translation can be applied to handle the E-C translation of nominalization, which, however, should be replaced by liberal translation when it is not practicable to make it.If both methods are not able to handle the problems, then translator should look for other innovative approaches. In this practical translation, the author adopts translation techniques of conversion, addition and division to handle nominalization for faithful and natural purposes.
