Ding Wenjiang is a famous geologist and social activist in modern China. He has made contributions in many fields of natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and is known as an encyclopedic figure. Then, why do we study the history of modern Chinese philosophy to mention him? Because he provoked the "Science and Metaphysics" debate in 1923,this debate became a major event in the history of modern Chinese philosophy, and had an important impact on the development of modern Chinese philosophy. This paper studies Ding Wenjiang’s thoughts from the perspective of philosophy history.First of all,it expounds the general formation process of Ding Wenjiang’s thoughts, from absorbing western scientific thoughts in the bud to gradually maturing into a system after returning to China and then continuing to develop his thoughts. In this process,Ding Wenjiang was influenced by both traditional thoughts and western culture and education.Secondly,it expounds the scientific and philosophical thoughts that Ding Wenjiang propagated in the debate of "Science and Metaphysics".Compared with the earlier science communication work, this debate greatly promoted the scientific movement in China, spread science and had a far-reaching influence, and injected the scientific source into the thoughts of the young people at that time. This paper expounds Ding Wenjiang’s other thoughts centering on science, including science and geology, science and politics, science and religion, etc. Finally, the value of Ding Wenjiang’s thought is evaluated in combination with the spirit of The Times, which not only affirms the reasonable factors in his thought, but also points out its historical limitations, and discusses the enlightenment of Ding Wenjiang’s thought to modern people.
