Hovered Saving The Country Through Science Or Politics—the Argumentation On The Revival Of The Nation Of Ding Wenjiang

In the early 20 th century,China was impacted by the traditional Chinese culture and Western advanced culture.As a new intellectual,Mr.Ding Wenjiang’s special living environment decided contradictions in his thoughts and behaviors,so he had hovered between the scientific country-saving and political country-saving all his life.Based on a large number of historical materials,this author analyzes the formation process and connotation of Ding Wenjiang’s national revivalideaand hisideapractice.It contains three parts.Part one: The formation process of Ding Wenjiang’s national revival idea is divided into three stages: the embryonic stage of the juvenile period,the formation stage when studying abroad and the development stage after returning home.In the juvenile period,Ding Wenjiang gave birth to the idea of country – saving influenced by the social situation at that time in the private school;when studying in UK,he advocated country – saving through the scientific knowledge,and the national revival idea of a moderately progressive social improvement;After returning home,his national revival idea further developed through the communication with Liang Qichao,Hu Shi and so on.Part two: Ding Wenjiang’ practice of national revival idea included the scientific country-saving practice and political country – saving practice.Mr.Ding Wenjiang,as a scientist,made important contributions to the development of modern science in China,including many large-scale hard investigations,the foundation of geological research classes and Geological Survey,the establishment of China Geological Society and so on.Under extremely hard scientific research conditions,he struggled to open up and made a lot of major scientific research achievements.The first generation of China’s geological professionals was inspired and cultivated by his practical action and scientific spirit,and he made a significant contribution for the development of modern science in China.In addition,as a politician,Mr.Ding Wenjiang believed that soldiers and politicians were not responsible for China’s failure in revitalization,but knowledge leaders with the responsibility and the ability who are afraid to bear the responsibility did.So,he frequently appeared in China’s political arena after participating in thefoundation of Effort Weekly to reform the society,create a progressive political environment and realize his own ideal.“good governmentalism”,“new dictatorship”and other ideas reflected his high-degree concern for nation.Part three: the connotation and analysis of his national revival idea included the revival goal – nation independence and country prosperity;revival path-science country – saving and political country-saving;debate between different paths-debate between science and metaphysics,and debate between democracy and dictatorship.The Ding Wenjiang’s national revival idea embodies his strong social concern consciousness,rational scientific idea and moderate political reform idea.He advocates the function of talents and scientific knowledge in national system construction and economic defense construction.However,the absolute scientific worship as well as the moderate and progressive reform can only be an ideal for the Chinese society in chaos.Ding Wenjiang,as an outstanding scientist and a politician,enthusiastically focuses on the reality of the country,and seeks ways of nation revival and country prosperity.With a strong sense of scientific rationality and a high degree of social concern awareness in his ideas have reflected his national renaissance consciousness.In this paper,with the idea formation,practice,connotation and analysis as the main line,the author analyzes the origin and the influence of his ideas from his growth,life,work and friendship.The information mainly comes from his article’s chronology,friends’ biographies,descendants’ commentary research,articles and books,etc.
