Known as "Russia's first professional art critic",Vladimir Vasilyevich Stasov was an influential art critic&music critic in the 19th century in Russia. In 1847,he began his musical career as a music writer and took active part in the Russian musical debates of the 1860s.In 1867,The Mighty Five became famous for an article he published on it,and since then it began to become well known to the public. For The Mighty Five,Stasov served as both a tutor and the most ardent supporter and propagandist.Through his lifetime,Stasov witnessed the development and prosperity of Russian national music art from Glinka to Glazunov. His critical concept of music had a great impact on the development of Russian music in future generations, and thus laid a solid foundation for Russian music to embark on an international stage. This paper mainly covers the involved contents of Stasov's critical view of music from four aspects, which is divided into four chapters. In the 1st chapter,it mainly introduces Stasov's life history and his most important artistic activities. It is an introduction of Stasov's life including three major developmental periods(childhood and student period, foreign period and domestic period). In addition,it describes his most important artistic activities:art criticism and music criticism. The 2nd chapter expounds stasov's main music criticism, including Stasov's comments on foreign musicians(Liszt,Schumann,Berlioz,Wagner)and Stasov's comments on Russian musicians(Glinka,Dargomyzhsky,Serov,The Mighty Five). The 3rd chapter summarizes Stasov's critical view of music.his concept of music emphasizes especially that music creation should highlight the principles of nationalism, the broad masses and realism. But based on the inherent limitations of the Enlightenment, his concept of music still has defects and deficiencies, that is,the lack of dialectical viewpoint for understanding the complex artistic life phenomenon in a particular historical period. On that basis above,it analyzes the main sources of Stasov's critical view of music:on the one hand,it was based on the philosophical thoughts of Belinsky and his peers;on the other hand,it is deeply influenced by Pushkin and other humanism literature works. The 4th chapter mainly describes the influence of Stasov's critical view of music and its historical significance. The greatest impact of stasov's critical view of music is that it played an important role in promoting the development of Russian folk music, which not only promoted the prosperity of Russian music, but also laid a solid foundation for the development and prosperity of Soviet music. At the beginning of the People's Republic of China, our country advocated to learn from the Soviet Union, and our social life was deeply influenced by the Soviet Union in all aspects.Soviet music played a very important role in the development and prosperity of Chinese music. Finally,it ends with an objective evaluation of the historical significance of Stasov's critical view of music.
