A large number of temporary migrant children moved to urban with parents as the progress of migration,and it has drawn wide attention from all fields of society,but so few researches focused on the situation after the migrant children returning their hometown.Returned migrant children who studied in some city at least half year,then backed to their hometown from some reasons.This kind of children were not clearly defined in previous studies,either migrant children or left-behind children,so few to be classified separately.Economic development didn't balance the relation between urban and rural in China,and the culture of rural is different from the culture of urban's in many aspects,such as life style,consumption habit,custom and value.Two different cultures may affect returned migrant children's cultural identity ? psychological adaptation and social competence.In this study,we compared returned migrant children with the children who never went to urban in rural area(local children),and built a moderated mediation model to examine the relations of culture identity and adaption of return migrant children,and in which academic achievement mediated.A sample of 650 children from grade eight to nine in An Hui rural area was recruited.Data on Social and cultural adaptation,self-esteem,loneliness,depression and social competence were collected from multiple sources including peer evaluations,teacher ratings,self-reports,and school records.Then we used statistical approaches to analyze the received data,drawing the conclusions:(1)Returned migrant children were reported higher urban identity than local children were reported.(2)Academic achievement was positively associated with social competence and self-esteem,negatively associated with loneliness and depression.(3)Academic partially mediated relations between urban identity and psychological adjustment,and type moderated this mediation effect.The mediation effects were found in returned migrant children,but not found in local children.(4)Academic partially mediated relations between urban identity and social competence,and type moderated this mediation effect.The mediation effects were found in returned migrant children,but not found in local children.Results are discussed in terms of the meaning and implications of urban identity for adaption and competence in different type children.
