Dongchang Gourd Cultural And Creative Product Design Research

Liaocheng is known as "The Hometown of Gourd Art",Dongchang gourd carving has been around for hundreds of years and was included in the second batch of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2018.Gourds are natural vessels,after carving and processing,they have both ornamental and practical values,and often appear in people's lives as household items.With the continuous improvement of productivity,a large variety of new materials are used in the production of daily necessities,bringing convenience to people's lives while also causing a huge impact on the gourd industry.In order to evolve,Dongchang gourd carving has to change with time,modernize itself and meet the aesthetics of the public.This thesis takes Dongchang gourd carving as the research object,the concept of cultural and creative product design into account to innovate upon the traditional Dongchang gourd carving.Firstly,we conducted a field study to analyze the current development and issues of Dongchang gourd carving,and to understand the characteristics,process and the artistic design pattern of Dongchang gourd carving.Secondly,based on the investigation and research,we proposed design strategies for Dongchang gourd cultural and creative products,innovate in the form,material and theme of gourd products,and provide theoretical support for the design practice of Dongchang gourd cultural and creative products.Finally,based on the proposed design strategy,the design practice incorporates the special cultural elements of Liaocheng and uses modern design patterns to create Dongchang gourd cultural and creative products based on the traditional Dongchang gourd carving that meet the aesthetics of the public.
