The 18 th century was an important period for the change, development and finalization of Stowe Garden.Stowe Garden strived to be regular in its initial form and the late 1770 s laid the foundation of what it is today. The process is achieved by gradually adjusting the layout, creating landscapes and changing the way of visiting and appreciation by absorbing artistic and cultural resources of different regions and other achievements in other fields. This thesis divides the development of Stowe Garden into four stages according to the chronological order, corresponding to the four chapters. The First Chapter discusses the initial form of Stowe Garden(1675 — early-1710s).By digging out relevant text and image materials, comparing the aesthetic activities and gardening practices of the same period, this chapter researches how Baron Richard Temple insisted on creating a garden space with the ideal French style in the limitation of history and natural environment. The Second Chapter discusses the “Westward Expansion” stage of Stowe Garden(early-1710 s — early-1730s),focusing on the activities of architect John Vanbrugh and landscape designer Charles Bridgeman in the west part of Stowe. The Ha-Ha Wall of Stowe with complex sources, the numbered chaotically engravings, and the plan with hidden geometric rules will all be analyzed and researched in-depth in this chapter. The Third Chapter discusses the“Eastward Expansion” stage of Stowe Garden(the mid-1730 s — 1749),involving Elysian Fields,Hawkwell Field and Grecian Valley. In the hands(or under the influence)of William Kent,Lancelot Brown and others, these three areas have become garden spaces with different characters. The Chinese House, which originally belonged to Elysian Fields,is also the focus of this chapter. The Fourth Chapter(final chapter)discusses the improvement and basic finalization of Stowe Garden(1750—1779).At this stage,Earl Temple integrated the east and west parts of Stowe. And a grand landscape that penetrates the inside and outside of the garden was formed with the help of large-scale construction activities.Under the influence of the aesthetics of the Chinese garden, the visiting route of Stowe had quietly changed. This article attempts to provide new ideas and perspectives for transcultural and transmedia garden art research while advancing the current study on Stowe Garden.
